Texas A&M’s 2025 season ended in pure disappointment on Saturday afternoon, as the Miami Hurricanes left a sold-out Kyle Field with a 10-3 victory in the first round of the College Football Playoff, just weeks after losing to rival Texas 27-17 to end the regular season. One of the primary reasons for the loss? Starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s regression.
While this sounds harsh, Reed’s regular-season stats, which include 25 touchdowns, were most against lesser opponents, outside of his impressive performance against Notre Dame early in the year, while his combined four interceptions against Texas and Miami, two of the better defenses in the country, are quite telling when grading his overall performance.
Still, the redshirt sophomore did elevate his game, as the additions of transfer wide receivers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver provided a spark through the air, especially after the catch, providing Reed more confidence in the pocket. However, Reed’s footwork, accuracy, and timing issues continued to hinder the Aggies’ ability to move the ball down the field, which was evident throughout Saturday’s loss.
So, what is Marcel Reed’s personal assessment of his play this season? After the game, the Tennessee native had plenty to say about OC Collin Klein’s departure, noting that, despite his mistakes, he did show growth, but there is plenty to work on in the offseason.
“I think I had a pretty decent season, definitely better than last season. I have room to grow and i’ll go into this offseason working on making tight throws and making sure my feet are set. I’m going to keep growing.”

This is the right mindset, but it would be smart for head coach Mike Elko to bring in a veteran quarterback from the transfer portal to create competition, which will only help Reed improve and provide insurance if said improvement does not come to fruition.
