The 2025 Texas high school football season is over, and the champions have been crowned.

A SportsDayHS panel of writers and editors — Jamie Hancock, Ishmael Johnson, Emma Moon, Greg Riddle, Myah Taylor and Demetrio Teniente — voted to decide the top 10 Dallas-area teams in Class 6A and Class 5A and the top five in Class 4A after the final week of the season.

1. South Oak Cliff

2025 record, playoff finish: 15-1, 5A Division II state champion

Preseason ranking: No. 1

South Oak Cliff beat Richmond Randle 35-19 in the 5A Division II state championship game, winning its third state title in five seasons. In 2025, SOC made its fifth straight appearance in the 5A Division II state title game and coach Jason Todd became the first Black coach to win three UIL state titles. There’s a dynasty in Dallas.

2. Frisco Lone Star

2025 record, playoff finish: 15-1, 5A Division I state finalist

Preseason ranking: No. 2

Lone Star advanced to the state title game for the first time since 2015, but fell short in the 5A Division I state championship. The program will return Baylor signee Karece Hoyt, who had 22 rushing touchdowns, and star quarterback Trey Wright, the team’s leading rusher with 1,694 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also threw for 3,879 yards and 43 scores.

3. Highland Park

2025 record, playoff finish: 12-2, 5A Division I regional finalist

Preseason ranking: No. 4

The six-time state champion made another deep playoff run in 2025 before falling to Frisco Lone Star in the regional finals. Legendary coach Randy Allen will be back for another season and so will quarterback Buck Randall, who was the Dallas area’s top passer in 5A this season with 4,396 yards and 51 touchdowns.

4. Melissa

2025 record, playoff finish: 11-3, 5A Division II state semifinalist

Preseason ranking: No. 17

After missing the playoffs in 2024, Melissa had a huge comeback in 2025, advancing to the fifth round before losing to eventual champion South Oak Cliff. Quarterback Brett Holloway, a transfer from Allen, rushed for 1,503 yards and 20 touchdowns to go with his 2,479 yards and 32 scores. Jacob Swain was one of the Dallas area’s top receivers in 5A with 1,075 yards and 14 touchdowns. The school is set to move up to 5A Division I in 2026.

5. Denton Ryan

2025 record, playoff finish: 12-2

Preseason ranking: No. 3

Ryan pieced together another 12-win season but fell to Aledo in the regional finals. Senior quarterback Quin Henigan passed for 3,012 yards and 30 touchdowns, and Tre’Vaughn Reynolds led the team in rushing with 964 yards and 10 touchdowns.

6. Argyle

2025 record, playoff finish: 12-2, 5A Division II Region I finalist

Preseason ranking: No. 6

After losing 44-21 in its season opener against Lone Star, Argyle won the next 11 games, advancing to the Class 5A Division II Region I final. Quarterback Maguire Gasperson, a UTSA signee, finished with 3,223 passing yards and 35 touchdowns. Wide receiver Julian Caldwell had 1,724 yards and 20 touchdowns in his junior season. Senior running back Nathaniel Bruce also contributed 1,045 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.

7. Prosper Walnut Grove

2025 record, playoff finish: 12-1, 5A Division II Region I semifinalist

Preseason ranking: No. 8

Prosper Walnut Grove won 12 consecutive games before falling to Argyle in the 5A Division II Region I semifinal. Despite Prosper Walnut Grove producing 510 yards, Argyle had two fourth-down stops in the third quarter.

Senior running back Cam Newton rushed for 2,402 yards and 41 touchdowns. Newton has 19 offers, but hasn’t committed to a school yet. Walnut Grove is moving up from 5A Division II to 6A in the next realignment cycle but will return sophomore quarterback Hayes Hackney, who had 3,134 passing yards and 37 touchdowns.

8. Terrell

2025 record, playoff finish: 12-1, Division II regional semifinalist

Preseason ranking: Unranked

Terrell’s dual-rushing attack of Julian Ashley (1,448 yards) and Roderick Hambrick Jr. (1,293 yards) helped Terrell achieve its highest win total since 1997.

9. Anna

2025 record, playoff finish: 10-3, regional semifinalist

Preseason ranking: No. 5

Although Anna fell short of making the regional final, Seth Parr’s program is still in the midst of its best-ever four-year stretch with a combined 47 wins to just nine losses.

10. Frisco Wakeland

2025 record, playoff finish: 11-2, regional semifinalist

Preseason ranking: No. 14

Quarterback Jayden Maples (3,075 yards) and receiver Grayson Myer (1,309 yards) combined to form one of the top offensive tandems in the D-FW area as Frisco Wakeland achieved the highest win total of its 20-year history.
