Boys’ Basketball

Sandwich defeated Harvard 55-43. Braden Behringer led the Indians with 14 points and 12 rebounds to record a double-double. Griffin Somlock added 12 points, including four key free throws, while EJ Treptow and Nick Michalek each scored 10 points in the victory. Eddie Ramirez and Amari Gray also contributed key rebounds and strong defense for the Indians.

Plano edged Marengo 60-59. Ethan Taxis led all scorers with 20 points and added 10 rebounds for a double-double, along with three steals. Cooper Beaty, Braylon Schmidt and Jayden Zepeda each scored nine points, with Beaty leading the Reapers with 11 rebounds.

Kaneland topped Marmion Academy 66-50 to improve to 7-0 on the season. Marshawn Cocroft led the Knights with 17 points, followed by Jeffrey Hassan with 14. Jalen Carter scored 11 points, and Evan Frieders added nine in the win. As for the Cadets, Joey Kramer scored 18 points, while Ben Piekarz added 11 points and Ali Tharwani chipped in with 10. 

Girls’ Basketball

Earlville earned a 54-16 win over West Carroll. Rylee Collins led the Red Raiders with 15 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Bailey Miller also posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Jacey Helgesen scored 13 points to go with five steals and four rebounds.

NEW COACH HIRES

Bolaji Adeoti has been named head coach of the varsity boys track team at Plano High School, while Chloe Davis has been hired as the new head coach of the varsity girls soccer team. Adeoti will continue his role as head cross country coach and head coach of the girls track team at Plano. Davis is new to Plano High School and is from Belton, Texas. She attended Manhattan University in New York, an NCAA Division I program.

Sycamore Community Unit School District 427 Board of Education and District Administration announced that Rob Stover will serve as the 19th head varsity football coach at Sycamore High School, replacing Joe Ryan, who retired following the 2025 season. Stover spent the past 11 seasons as an assistant coach with the Sycamore football program and served as co-defensive coordinator for the last seven seasons. Prior to joining Sycamore, Stover was the defensive coordinator at Central High School in Burlington and an assistant coach at Unity High School in Tolono. A Central High School graduate, Stover earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and physical education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and his master’s degree in athletic coaching from West Virginia University. He is a physical education teacher at Southeast Elementary School in Sycamore and a co-advisor for Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Sycamore High School.

UPCOMING BASKETBALL BROADCAST

WSPY has two games remaining on its broadcast schedule this week. Tonight, Kaneland will face Central High School of Burlington in a nonconference varsity girls basketball game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will air live on 107.1 FM WSPY, and the game will be available to stream live online at wspynews.com.

UPCOMING ATHLETIC EVENTS

Oswego High School alumni are invited to a basketball open gym in the main gym at OHS on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 1 p.m.

The 2025 Shipyard Showdown, a boys varsity basketball tournament hosted by Seneca High School, begins Tuesday, Dec. 23. Earlville will face Lexington at 9 a.m. in the new gym, while Somonauk will take on Marquette at 9 a.m. in the old gym. Indian Creek will play Flanagan-Cornell at noon in the old gym, and Serena will face Woodland at 1:30 p.m., also in the old gym. All games will take place at Seneca High School. Tournament games will be broadcast on 103.1 FM WCSJ and streamed live online at wcsjnews.com.

The Communities Versus Cancer event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, at Oswego High School. The all-day event includes the “Out for Blood” blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the field house. The day will conclude with girls and boys basketball games between Oswego and Yorkville, with the girls game tipping off at 3:30 p.m. and the boys game at 5:30 p.m. More information will be released as the event approaches.

LOCAL ATHLETICS

Oswego Hockey Club

The varsity team has four games scheduled this weekend. On Friday, Dec. 19, the OHC will travel to the Arctic Ice Arena in Orland Park to face the Saints Hockey Club at 5 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 20, the OHC will play two events at All Seasons Ice Rinks in Naperville, beginning with the alumni skate at 4:25 p.m., followed by a game against the Plainfield Predators Hockey Club at 6:05 p.m. On Sunday, Dec. 21, the varsity team will take on Maine Hockey at All Seasons Ice Rinks at 6:40 p.m. The junior varsity team has one game scheduled this weekend and will also face Maine Hockey on Sunday at 4:50 p.m.
