WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — “This one should hurt,” Nicki Collen said postgame after a narrow defeat gave Texas Tech its first win over Baylor Women’s Basketball in 13 years as the Lady Red Raiders escaped from Waco with a 61-60 win on Sunday night.

The Bears once again played much of the game without their leading scorer, Taliah Scott, who did not start the game despite being a game-time decision. Scott suffered an ankle injury against Texas and sat out the Bears’ non-conference finale against Southern on Thursday.

Baylor weathered the storm in the first half, taking a 27-25 lead into the halftime break.

However, turnovers and missed shots helped Texas Tech hang tough with Baylor, stealing the lead back on the opening possession of the second half before Yuting Deng gave the Bears a 43-39 lead with her first triple of the game heading into the fourth quarter.

Baylor and Texas Tech went neck-and-neck after that, with Taliah Scott checking in with under two minutes remaining and immediately making an impact, assisting on back-to-back baskets before checking out for the remainder of the game with a 60-57 Baylor lead.

Texas Tech cut the lead to one and with just seconds remaining drew a foul on a Bailey Maupin drive to the basket. Maupin made both free throws with three seconds left to give Texas Tech a 61-60 lead.

Which left the Bears with one final opportunity, a chance they gave to the hot hand Yuting Deng. A season-high 23 points in the green and gold kept Baylor in it but Deng couldn’t get a last second layup to fall and Texas Tech survives in Waco to hand Baylor a loss to open Big 12 play.

Baylor takes a brief break before hitting the road to continue Big 12 Conference play out in Stillwater against Oklahoma State on Wednesday, December 31st at 2:00 p.m.
