LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The South Plains Food Bank now has thousands of pounds of protein to go toward serving the people in the area.
United Family and Smart Chicken gave more than 4,000 pounds of chickens to the food bank as part of the 25th annual Smart Giving Program.
Leaders with the food bank said they try to have every meal they provide be at least a quarter protein. Officials with the nonprofit said the sizable donation of ground chicken, drumsticks and chicken breasts is crucial to serving the people of the South Plains.
“Something like this is just going to really, really help those that are in need not only during the holiday season,” Travis Johnson, COO of South Plains Food Bank, said. “Food insecurity is year-round. When we come back from the holiday season it just doesn’t stop and this is going to really help us continue to serve families into the month of January.”
The South Plains Food Bank serves more than 11,000 families each month.
