Christmas just got even more green in El Paso County.

TreeCycle is offering a charitable alternative to tossing your Christmas tree after the holidays. For just $5 per tree, residents can drop off their trees at six locations throughout the county.

Through the program, the county is offering an alternative that reduces tree waste, creates mulch and supports youth development programs throughout the region, according to a news release from Colorado Springs Youth Sports.

Mulch creates a protective layer of a material that is spread on top of soil to help conserve and extend available water while protecting the soil from erosion and suppressing weeds, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

According to Colorado Springs Youth Sports spokesperson Steve Czarnecki, every donation goes toward youth develop programs in the region, including Youth Sports.

The nonprofit organization operates the El Pomar Youth Sports Park to develop and empower children through sports, Czarnecki said in a news release.

Trees and donations will be accepted at the following locations from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Jan. 3-4 and 10-11:

Tree drop-offs and donations will also be available at Rocky Top Resources starting Friday and will last until the end of January. The business is open from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays.

Trees must have their decorations, stands and spikes removed before being dropped off. Tree debris, other than from Christmas trees, can’t be accepted.

Donations can be made in person or online. For more information on TreeCycle, visit its website or call 719-323-8043.
