Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones’ recommendation to move city elections to November was a no-brainer. It will save money and most likely will increase turnout.

Some City Council members wanted to delay this action and poll their constituents. This is nonsense. We live in a representative democracy where elected officials are empowered, and entrusted, to make decisions.

I believe this was a delaying tactic to try to deny Jones even a minor victory. Nevertheless, the council approved it 6-5. This was a commonsense change. Next, debate about moving city elections to coincide with the general election years.

There is a straightforward way to choose where speed reductions might occur.

Invite historic neighborhoods, neighborhood conservation districts and organized neighborhoods without zoning designation to request lower speeds on their residential streets.

There seems to be no reason to drive 30 mph instead of 25 mph for a few blocks from  home to a thoroughfare and back.

How much change can that make in “drive time” when  headed for work or to a Spurs game?

As an alternative to rainbow crosswalks, how about bathing the Tower of the Americas in rainbow-colored lighting?

This would literally and symbolically shed light on the misguided policies of Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Attorney General Ken Paxton and all people who follow their demeaning rhetoric.

The Tower of the Americas bathed in rainbow-colored lighting would be seen from miles away from San Antonio, whether from the road or from the air.

Furthermore, everyone walking the streets of San Antonio will be able to see the beautifully lit Tower of the Americas.
