{"id":103325,"date":"2025-12-29T04:31:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T04:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/103325\/"},"modified":"2025-12-29T04:31:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T04:31:08","slug":"a-texas-teen-vanished-during-a-donut-shops-morning-shift-3-days-later-she-was-found-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/103325\/","title":{"rendered":"A Texas Teen Vanished During a Donut Shop&#8217;s Morning Shift. 3 Days Later She Was Found Dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> NEED TO KNOW<br \/>\nJust after 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 23, 1985, Jennifer Leigh Day started her part-time job at Preston Donuts in Dallas, TexasThe 14-year-old was at the shop alone that morningA customer who came into the shop at 6:35 a.m. found it empty, with just the teen&#8217;s purse left behind<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_2-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> A Texas teen was found dead in the summer of 1985 and now authorities are taking a renewed look at the case to try to find her killer.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_4-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Early on June 23, 1985, Jennifer Leigh Day, 14, was working by herself at her part-time weekend job at Preston Donuts in Dallas, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planocoldcases.com\/case\/1985-7\/jennifer-leigh-day\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Plano Police Department.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_6-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> At 5:35 a.m., Jennifer spoke on the phone with the donut shop owner to confirm that she had made it to work, police said, adding that she spoke to a customer until about 6:20 a.m. that Sunday.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Fifteen minutes later, at approximately 6:35 a.m., a customer came into the shop and found it empty.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Jennifer was nowhere to be seen but her belongings had been left behind.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_12-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> According to police, there was no money missing from the cash register and Jennifer&#8217;s purse and jewelry were located on the counter.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Shortly after, she was reported missing, with her family worrying about what could have happened to the young teenager.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;Instantly, I was thinking something&#8217;s wrong,\u201d her brother, Jeff Day, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/texas\/news\/plano-cold-case-jennifer-day-murder-reopened\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CBS News Texas.<\/a> \u201cAnd then seeing the police presence at the shop made it \u2014 that drove it home to me. In my mind, she had probably been abducted and&#8230; it was brutal. I have a hard time even talking about it now&#8230; the feelings that I went through&#8230; not knowing.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The search for Jennifer came to a tragic end three days later on June 26, 1985.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> An excavation crew working near Preston Road and White Road in Plano \u2014 about 11 miles from the donut shop \u2014 discovered Jennifer\u2019s naked and bloodied body.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> She died after suffering multiple stab wounds to the neck, police said.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> According to her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/119943664\/jennifer_leigh-day\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">obituary,<\/a> &#8220;Jennifer Leigh Day was a sweet young lady that loved life. She was taken much too early, but she will never be forgotten by her family and those who knew her.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Investigators started looking into the case and concluded that she had likely been abducted.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> According to Plano police, one of the most promising leads came from a witness who parked in a lot across the street from the donut shop at approximately 6:32 a.m.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The witness told detectives that shortly after he arrived, he saw a male and a female get into a large, dark colored car in front of the donut shop and leave the parking lot.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Detectives searched for her killer but the case eventually went cold.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_34-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> In 2024 or so, Jeff Day reached out to the Plano police chief to see if there was anything that could be done to help find his sister\u2019s killer and bring the murderer to justice, CBS News Texas reported.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_38-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Soon after, he received a call from Detective Aaron Benzick, who he said was interested in taking a renewed look at the case as part of an initiative with the department and because of the nonprofit he started in 2023 called Solve the Case.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_40-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solvethecase.org\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SolvetheCase.org<\/a> provides free tools and services to help unsolved cases of murder, missing persons and serial offenses, according to the website.\u00a0The public \u2014 nationwide \u2014 is invited to add a case to the website\u2019s database for free and to solve a case to help families and law enforcement bring justice to victims.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_42-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage?
