The updated fares were approved by the Lubbock City Council as part of the 2026 budget adoption and align with the Citibus 5-Year Service Plan adopted in November 2024. These changes are designed to support long-term service sustainability, maintain affordability for short trips, and ensure compliance with ADA-required service.

Why the Change Matters

Service Sustainability: Fare adjustments help Citibus continue providing reliable service while managing rising operational costs.Equity and Accessibility: The new structure balances affordability for short trips with fair cost recovery for longer-distance travel. ADA-required service remains fully protected.Consistency with National Standards: The fare model reflects best practices used by peer transit agencies across the country, ensuring Lubbock remains aligned with federal guidance and industry benchmarks.

Paratransit Fares

Paratransit fares will be determined by the trip’s proximity to a fixed route:

$2 per trip — Trips beginning or ending within ¾ mile of a fixed route$5 per trip — Trips beginning or ending outside ¾ mile but within 2 miles of a fixed route, including trips to or from High Point Village$10 per trip — Trips beginning or ending outside 2 miles of a fixed route, up to the Lubbock city limits

On-Demand Fares

On-Demand fares will be based on trip distance:

$2 per trip — Trips under 2 miles$5 per trip — Trips of 2–4 miles$7 per trip — Trips of 4–7 miles$10 per trip — Trips of 7 miles or more

Fixed Route Fares Remain Unchanged

Citibus fixed route fares are not affected by this update and remain the most affordable option for riders. At just $1.00 per trip (with discounts available for seniors, students, and individuals with disabilities), fixed route service continues to provide the lowest-cost mobility choice across Lubbock. Riders are encouraged to use fixed routes whenever possible to maximize savings while maintaining convenient access to destinations citywide.

Rider Information

No Policy Changes: Service policies and eligibility requirements remain unchanged; only fares are being updated.Trip Planning: Riders are encouraged to consider trip distances when booking On-Demand trips to better understand the applicable fare.Technology Support: Citibus’ booking platforms and customer service staff will provide clear fare information at the time of scheduling.Community Outreach: Citibus will share updated fare information through its website, social media channels, printed rider notices, and onboard postings.

For questions or assistance, please contact Citibus Customer Service at (806) 775-3640 or visit citibus.com.

Copyright 2025 KCBD.
