Without it, we would be defenseless against everything from bee stings and broken bones to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/is-raw-milk-safe.h00-159776445.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">food poisoning<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/is-it-a-cold--the-flu--allergies-or-covid-19-coronavirus-how-to-tell-the-difference.h00-159385101.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">common cold<\/a>.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But many factors affect the body\u2019s inflammatory response, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/prevention-screening\/manage-your-risk\/diet.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">diet<\/a> is just one of them. Depending on what you eat, your diet could either be causing or reducing inflammation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInflammation is basically an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/what-does-it-mean-to-be-immunocompromised-covid-19.h00-159387468.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">immune response<\/a> to any kind of threat your body detects, like bacteria, toxins or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/food-allergies-and-cancer--how-to-nourish-yourself-well-during-cancre-treatment.h00-159616278.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">allergens<\/a>,\u201d says Lindsey Wohlford, a wellness dietitian at MD Anderson. \u201cSometimes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/food-allergies-vs--cancer-symptoms--how-can-you-tell-the-difference.h00-159778812.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">food is the threatening agent<\/a> that causes your body to react.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Why managing inflammation is important<\/p>\n<p>Inflammation can make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/what-constitutes-your-medical-history.h00-159460845.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">existing illnesses<\/a> worse and raise your risk for several diseases, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancer-types.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cancer<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you already have arthritis or another chronic disease related to inflammation, for instance, eating inflammatory foods may trigger the symptoms. Or, if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/are-your-symptoms-inflammatory-bowel-syndrome-ibs-or-colorectal-cancer.h00-159458478.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">irritable bowel syndrome<\/a>, you could see an increase in bloating or intestinal pain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver time, inflammation can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/what-is-cancer.h00-159537378.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cell damage<\/a> that increases your risk for chronic diseases like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/why-managing-heart-health-during-and-after-cancer-treatment-is-crucial.h00-159226512.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">heart disease<\/a> and cancer,\u201d Wohlford says. \u201cMany cancers are thought to be triggered in response to inflammation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Foods that increase inflammation<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re trying to manage inflammation, Wohlford suggests avoiding\u202fthe foods on the list below.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trans fats<\/p>\n<p>Also called hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, trans fats extend the shelf life of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/7-examples-of-processed-food.h00-159621801.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">processed foods<\/a>. They also make your doughnuts airy and your French fries crisp. But these hydrogen-infused fats trigger inflammation, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Saturated fats\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Saturated fats are found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/beef-tallow-benefits-should-you-use-it.h00-159776445.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">animal products<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/is-red-meat-bad-for-you.h00-159696756.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">meat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/5-things-to-know-about-dairy-and-cancer-risk.h00-159623379.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cheese<\/a> \u2014 and even some plant-based products, like coconut oil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Omega-6 fats\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Omega-6 fats are found in plant-based cooking oils like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/is-seed-oil-healthy.h00-159775656.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sunflower<\/a>, safflower, corn and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/is-soy-safe-for-patients-with-breast-cancer.h00-159538167.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">soybean<\/a>. When consumed in large amounts, they may promote inflammation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Carbohydrates\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/macronutrients-101--what-to-know-about-protein--carbs-and-fats.h00-159774078.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Carbohydrates<\/a> are a necessary part of a healthy diet. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/what-are-ultra-processed-foods.h00-159538167.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">refined carbs<\/a> that are low in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/8-tips-for-reaching-your-daily-fiber-intake.h00-159622590.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fiber<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/how-many-grams-of-added-sugar-should-you-have-per-day.h00-159623379.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">high in sugar<\/a> can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/does-cancer-treatment-cause-unwanted-involuntary-weight-gain-side-effect.h00-159385890.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">weight gain<\/a> and promote inflammation. So, choose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/5-things-to-know-about-grains.h00-159700701.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">whole-grains<\/a> whenever possible, and skip the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/natural-versus-refined-sugar--what-s-the-difference.h00-159465579.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cake<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/do-sugary-drinks-increase-colorectal-cancer-risk.h00-159698334.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">soda<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Red meat and processed meat<\/p>\n<p>Red meat includes cuts of beef, pork and lamb. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/processed-meat-and-colorectal-cancer-is-there-a-link.h00-158991390.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Processed meat<\/a> describes products like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/have-you-been-eating-processed-meat-without-realizing-it.h00-159461634.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hot dogs, lunch meats and sausage<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Both red and processed meats are linked to inflammation and increased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/prevention-screening\/manage-your-risk.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cancer risk<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/how-to-cook-meat-and-keep-your-cancer-risk-low.h00-159536589.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The way you cook meat<\/a> can also increase your cancer risk. So, opt for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/6-easy-protein-sources-for-cancer-patients.h00-159699912.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fish<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/cardiac-diet-heart-healthy-diet-what-is-it--what-can-you-eat-and-what-should-you-avoid.h00-159539745.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plant-based proteins<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/beans-101--what-to-know-and-why-it-matters.h00-159780390.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">beans<\/a> instead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Inflammation is the body\u2019s immune response to a threat.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<br \/>\nInflammation can make existing illnesses worse and raise your risk for several diseases, including cancer.\u202f\u00a0<br \/>\nYou can manage inflammation with your diet by limiting foods known to cause it and eating foods known to reduce it.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Foods that reduce inflammation<\/p>\n<p>Avoiding inflammatory foods is a great start toward getting healthy. But Wohlford also suggests several foods that can pull double-duty \u2014 meaning they provide important nutrients and help reduce inflammation. Here are four of them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Omega-3 fats\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These fats are found in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/3-nutrients-cancer-survivors-should-know-flaxseed-omega-3s-iron.h00-159305412.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flaxseed<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/nuts-101--how-to-work-these-nutritional-powerhouses-into-your-diet.h00-159775656.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walnuts<\/a>\u00a0and fatty fish like salmon. They are also found in olive and canola oils, which make healthier substitutes for sunflower, safflower, corn and soybean oils when cooking.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Vitamins C and E\u202f<\/p>\n<p>These are important nutrients that also fight inflammation. You can get more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/iv-vitamin-therapy--is-it-safe-to-use-during-chemo.h00-159779601.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">vitamin C<\/a>\u00a0from\u202fcitrus fruits and green vegetables. To get more vitamin E, try\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/seeds--the--unsung-hero--of-plant-based-nutrition.h00-159777234.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seeds<\/a>, nuts and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/36-foods-that-can-help-lower-your-cancer-risk.h00-159774078.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leafy greens<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prebiotic foods\u202f<\/p>\n<p>These promote the growth of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/nutrivention-food-as-medicine.h00-159776445.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">good bacteria in your gut<\/a>.\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/prebiotics-versus-probiotics-whats-the-difference.h00-159774078.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prebiotic<\/a>\u202ffoods include artichokes, onions,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/5-things-to-know-about-grains.h00-159700701.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whole grains<\/a>, asparagus, leeks, garlic, sweet potatoes and legumes, such as peanuts and beans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Probiotic foods\u202f<\/p>\n<p>Probiotics\u202finclude fermented foods that contain healthy bacteria, such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, tempeh and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/what-are-the-benefits-of-drinking-kombucha.h00-159542901.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kombucha<\/a>. But if you\u2019re going for yogurt, opt for plain and add your own fruit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The best way to reduce your risk through diet: variety<\/p>\n<p>There is no magic group of foods that will prevent cancer.
