Carter Smith\/Courtesy of MD Anderson<\/p>\n<p>In November 2025, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cprit.texas.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas<\/a> granted more than $120 million to Houston organizations and companies as part of 73 awards issued statewide. Photo via TMC<\/p>\n<p>In September 2025, a new business accelerator at Houston\u2019s Texas Medical Center received a nearly $3 million grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cprit.texas.gov\/news-events\/articles\/cprit-approves-more-than-27-million-in-grants-for-cancer-research-in-texas\/https:\/\/www.cprit.texas.gov\/news-events\/articles\/cprit-approves-more-than-27-million-in-grants-for-cancer-research-in-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CPRIT grant<\/a>, awarded to the Texas Medical Center Foundation, will help launch the Accelerator for Cancer Medical Devices. Photo via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Houston-based The Welch Foundation doled out $27 million in its June 2025 round of grants for chemical research, equipment and postdoctoral fellowships. $25.5 million was allocated for the foundation&#8217;s longstanding research grants, which provide $100,000 per year in funding for three years to full-time, regular tenure or tenure-track faculty members in Texas. Photo courtesy Houston Methodist.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2025, Houston-based nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/746064309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Duncan Fund<\/a> awarded a $25 million gift to Houston Methodist&#8217;s department of medicine to establish new endowed fellowships, streamline complex care and bring artificial intelligence into the fold to develop more personalized treatment plans. In turn, the health care system announced that it would rename the department the Houston Methodist Charles W. Carter Smith\/Courtesy of MD Anderson<\/p>\n<p>In June 2025, it was announced that several prominent cancer researchers would be coming to the Houston area thanks to $22 million in grants awarded by the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). The biggest CPRIT recruitment grant \u2014 $6 million \u2014 went to genetics researcher Jean Gautier. Photo via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Baylor College of Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/research\/research-centers\/center-for-precision-medicine-models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Center for Precision Medicine Models<\/a> received a $10 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health in November 2025, which will allow it to continue its work studying rare genetic diseases. The news came as the Kinder Foundation announced an $18.5 million expansion project for <a href=\"https:\/\/houston.culturemap.com\/news\/city-life\/emancipation-park-stage-cultural-center-upgrades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Emancipation Park<\/a> in the heart of Third Ward.
