EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – As colder temperatures move into the borderland, many families are already thinking ahead \u2014 not just about staying warm, but about looking out for others.<\/p>\n
For many families in El Paso, winter preparation starts with the basics \u2014 warmer clothes, hot coffee, and time together at home.<\/p>\n
“The weather feels really nice\u2026 it\u2019s beautiful because you can go out with your children, take walks, and spend time as a family,” said Aliana Anahi Reamirez Centeno.<\/p>\n
Right now, the weather feels comfortable \u2014 but Aliana knows that won\u2019t last forever.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re prepared for the cold because we know the weather always changes,” she added.<\/p>\n
Meteorologists say those changes could come quickly, with colder air pushing into the region and temperatures dropping sharply. <\/p>\n
For some the colder temperatures are not truly welcome.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it\u2019s going to be hard\u2026 temperatures could drop close to 25 degrees. We need to get prepared,\u201d said Juan Echeagaray. <\/p>\n
According to the National Weather Service, families should prepare by insulating exposed pipes, checking home heating systems, and keeping space heaters away from flammable objects.<\/p>\n
Drivers are also encouraged to check antifreeze levels, tire pressure, and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles.<\/p>\n
\u201cA few years back, we had that snow \u2014 it froze a lot of things. We don\u2019t want that again,\u201d said Echeagaray.<\/p>\n
Those freezes caused widespread damage across the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember the pipes froze, trees came down \u2014 people lost everything. We had three people die. That\u2019s why we have to take this seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n
The National Weather Service recommends monitoring forecasts closely and preparing ahead of any freeze warnings.<\/p>\n
