Body camera video shows an officer walking back up to the car and asking the driver to step out.<\/p>\n
In the video, the driver responds, \u201cnah man,\u201d as the officer reaches toward the door.<\/p>\n
Seconds later, the car drives away.<\/p>\n
Officers are then seen running back to their patrol vehicles.<\/p>\n
Audio from the body camera captures officers shouting commands, including \u201cPut the gun down,\u201d and \u201cHe just shot at me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police say the driver fired a gun while driving away. <\/p>\n
Surveillance video from a nearby business shows the car crashing near Antoine Drive and West 34th Street.<\/p>\n
Police say the driver got out of the car and ran.<\/p>\n
Investigators say the driver fired again while running. Officers then fired back in a nearby parking lot.<\/p>\n
The driver was hit and taken to a hospital, where police say he was listed in stable condition.<\/p>\n
Police identified the driver as 33-year-old Jacques Otu Bassey.<\/p>\n
Investigators say Bassey is charged with two counts of attempted capital murder of a police officer and evading arrest with a motor vehicle.<\/p>\n
Police also say two women were inside the car at the time of the stop. One of them had a felony warrant and was taken into custody.<\/p>\n
No officers were injured during the incident.<\/p>\n
As with all officer-involved shootings, the case is being reviewed by the HPD Homicide Division, the Internal Affairs Division, and the Harris County District Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
Assistant Chief Luis Mendez Sierra said the situation changed quickly once officers were fired upon.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re trying to do a traffic stop and you start getting fired at,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n
