LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Mild and warm weather this afternoon with chilly but pleasant conditions for our New Year\u2019s Evening. We will, however, start the year with above average temperatures and gusty winds.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s sunshine will be filtered through thin cirrus clouds. The west then southwest breeze will remain light, around 10 mph (give or take). Temperatures will peak ten or more degrees above average for the final day of the year. Great for an afternoon walk, run, or ride.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re planning to be outside this New Year\u2019s Eve, you\u2019re in luck. Though chilly, it will be pleasant, dry, and with a light wind. Doesn\u2019t get much better in these here parts for ringing in a new year. You can leave the parka in storage, a light jacket should do.<\/p>\n

Of course, this is West Texas. Can gusty winds be far? <\/p>\n

Winds will ramp up tomorrow, becoming quite gusty, and will continue into Friday. Wind speeds are expected to increase to around 20 to 30 mph tomorrow, with gusts as high as 50 mph. Some of the strongest winds may occur Friday morning.<\/p>\n

New Year\u2019s Day, in addition to windy, generally will be cloudy. A few sprinkles are even possible, but there will not be any measurable precipitation. It will be quite warm for the first day of the year. Highs will range from the upper 60s to the mid-70s. That\u2019s as much as 20 degrees above average for January 1.<\/p>\n

Winds will gradually diminish late Friday, but remain brisk, as the system responsible moves east.<\/p>\n

A weak cold front will arrive Friday night, but will bring only a slight dip in temperatures. <\/p>\n

On This Date<\/p>\n

On this date in 1992, freezing rain moved across the South Plains during the evening. The ice was over 1\/2 inch thick on autos and other exposed surfaces. The ice was a contributing factor to several traffic accidents. The weight of the ice snapped tree branches and power lines in Lubbock, Hale Center, and Littlefield. There were no deaths or injuries related to the weather.<\/p>\n
