DreamWeek in San Antonio brings 17 days of art, education, and entertainment from January 9-31 at venues citywide \u2014 all with a mission of rejoicing in the shared humanity envisioned in Martin Luther King Jr.’s immortal “I Have a Dream” speech.<\/p>\n
Since its founding in 2013, DreamWeek<\/a> has hosted over a thousand events, from plays to gallery shows to thought-provoking symposiums. With so many inspirational happenings on the calendar, it can be hard to know where to start, but we’ve curated a few standout picks. Few things unite a community like food. During this sweet event, participants will all cook a “king’s pilaf,\u201d one of the most famous Azerbaijani desserts, combining lean lamb with sweet dried fruits and a golden lavash crust. Guests will also explore the culture and history related to the dish, shining a light on Iranian Azerbaijan culture.

Gospel choirs, hip hop performers, comedians, and more lift spirits during this lively annual revue. Artists like Choice the Poet, Kara Nichols, Alexandria Harrison, and the River City Christianettes will hit the stage alongside other Christian artists from across Texas. Experience tales of the Indigenous South Texans as they were told for centuries. Representatives of the Coahuiltecan peoples perform oral histories that tell the stories of the plants and animals of the state as well as the origins of the universe. These tales tackle everything from medicine to love, told in a variety of styles that range from somber to funny. The history of the Coahuiltecan culture is a living thing, not a relic of the past, and this can\u2019t-miss event offers an opportunity to become the next link in an ancient chain of stories.The Gardens of Hacienda Tecolote, 7910 Donore Pl.

San Antonio may have fewer<\/a> barriers<\/a> to saving up for a house, but affording a down payment can still feel like a heavy lift. The four partners of the City\u2019s Strategic Housing Implementation \u2014 the City of San Antonio, the San Antonio Housing Trust, Opportunity Home San Antonio, and Bexar County \u2014 are hosting this symposium in order to help the 90,000 San Antonians who struggle with affordable housing. Fashion, even more than food, is the prime currency of cultural exchange. This runway show embraces two of the most famous clothing exports of Texas: leather and lace. From the chaps of the vaqueros to the lacework of Mexican and Spanish dilettantes, local and regional designers will showcase their interpretations on these two materials that have been a part of the state\u2019s heritage.
