{"id":109281,"date":"2026-01-03T05:41:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-03T05:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/109281\/"},"modified":"2026-01-03T05:41:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T05:41:18","slug":"central-texas-roadway-safety-plan-gets-federal-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/109281\/","title":{"rendered":"Central Texas roadway safety plan gets federal funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">Bell County, Texas (KWTX) &#8211; The Central Texas Council of Governments is updating a plan to make roadways in seven different Central Texas counties safer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The changes are thanks to a federal grant recently given to the organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cTraffic circles, traffic calming devices, leading interval pedestrian timing, so that around crosswalks, things are safer,\u201d said Uryan Nelson, Director of Planning and Regional Services for the Central Texas Council of Governments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The organization is getting $548,000 in federal money to update its Safety Action Plan, a 2022 study that identified some of the most dangerous roadways for drivers and pedestrians alike in those counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The money will be used to put temporary fixes in those areas, with an emphasis on work zones, school zones and other pedestrian heavy spots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cYou know, just making people more aware of \u2018hey, things are a little more dangerous right here, so you need to be a little more cautious,\u2019\u201d Nelson said. \u201cAfter a year, we\u2019ve got to take all of the data that we\u2019ve combined and put it into our plan and see if we want to apply for additional funds to see if we want to implement those changes permanently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">With the grant, the Council of Governments has to match 20% of what they received from the federal government as part of their agreement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Money that the organization says won\u2019t come from other local governments, but from the time local officials spend working on the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cWe can use that time, and the dollar amount associated with it, as the match for these funds. So, there won\u2019t be any anticipated cash that we\u2019re going hand in hat for to city councils,\u201d Nelson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Included in the action plan are Bell, Coryell, Hamilton, Lampasas, Milam, Mills, and San Saba counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 KWTX.
