Texas Tech<\/a> women\u2019s basketball and head coach Krista Gerlich announced on Friday that the program has added 7-foot-1 center Stephanie Okechukwu to this season\u2019s roster.<\/p>\n

Okechukwu, who attended high school in Kyoto, Japan, would be the tallest women\u2019s college basketball player in the history of the sport should she take the floor.<\/p>\n

While she\u2019s set to join Texas Tech basketball this semester, the university is awaiting the NCAA\u2019s response to determine Okechukwu\u2019s initial eligibility status, which will help determine when she will first play. It could be as soon as this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cStephanie has finally arrived in Lubbock and she was worth the time, effort and teamwork that went into getting her here,\u201d Gerlich said in a statement from the program. \u201cShe brings an element to our team that is an instant impact. … She has a team-first mentality and [is] ready to contribute in any way possible. She is a great fit for our program and culture, and we are overjoyed that she has arrived in Lubbock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Okechukwu speaks three languages (English, Igbo and Japanese) and she\u2019s planning to major in business.<\/p>\n
