Beacon Hill is a pretty little pocket of sunshine in\u00a0Texas’ Alamo\u00a0City. Boasting\u00a0artsy murals, green spaces, and timeless vintage architecture, just about every step of this place comes with a good view\u00a0\u2014 which is great news because Beacon Hill’s layout really lends itself to\u00a0walking. The online platform Walk Score<\/a> ranked the cozy district as the 10th most walkable neighborhood in all of San Antonio, where you’ll find\u00a0the highest amount of free things to do in America<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One of Beacon Hill’s main corridors is only about a mile and a half long.\u00a0Blanco Road is\u00a0centered around a roundabout bedecked with a 28-foot-tall sculpture, aptly called The Beacon<\/a>. Since it’s fairly short, the strip is\u00a0perfect for a stroll.\u00a0It’s peppered with plenty of local shops and tasty eats\u00a0within just a few blocks of the statue.<\/p>\n

This historic nook of the city stands roughly\u00a010 miles southwest of the San Antonio International Airport. Beacon Hill\u00a0hugs Interstate 10, north of\u00a0Fredericksburg Road, and is\u00a0just a short drive from the downtown heart of the city. This under-the-radar community is truly a local gem, with one Redditor<\/a> saying, “Beacon Hill may be the most underrated neighborhood in San Antonio.”\u00a0Another\u00a0user<\/a>, seemingly hell-bent on gatekeeping the greatness of the district, wasn’t so keen on this hidden gem snagging any spotlight: “Shhhhh don’t tell anyone about Beacon Hill.” Whoops, we’ve let the cat out of the bag.<\/p>\n

San Antonio’s Beacon Hill neighborhood has an eclectic bunch of bric-a-brac shops to peruse. The\u00a0Blanco strip is especially teeming with them.\u00a0Pop into a cute gift store or antique shop to nab a few trinkets for back home.\u00a0The\u00a0Bizarre Treasures (Oddity Shop)<\/a>, which is steps away from the roundabout, is sure to pique your curiosity. The place has pretty solid reviews online and is stocked with\u00a0all the very best weird and strange things.\u00a0One Google review<\/a> reads, “No need to wait for doc to fix the flux capacitor you can go back in time right now! All the antique items had me feeling like I was back in some vintage movie or show.”<\/p>\n

A few other quirky shops lie within walking distance, including the nostalgic collectible toy store\u00a0GG’s Emporium<\/a>\u00a0and the antiques retailer\u00a0House of History<\/a>. Vintage clothing and other thrifted finds line the racks at Good Golly, Tx<\/a>. If you’re on the hunt for larger items for your home, check out\u00a0Urban Goods<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0San Antonio Furniture Finders<\/a>. Both carry a really good selection of retro pieces. For wearable flair, head to the nearby jewelry store Lolita On Blanco<\/a>, which is top-rated on Yelp<\/a>. One shopper called the boutique “a world of wonders,” adding that it has “all the things you want to be a conversation piece when you wear it.”<\/p>\n

The eats around\u00a0Beacon Hill are just as enticing. Since San\u00a0Antonio is one of the Texas cities with Michelin stars<\/a>, it’s safe to say you’re in for a pretty tasty bite.\u00a0There are plenty of savory picks on\u00a0Blanco Road.\u00a0Have an afternoon pick-me-up at the ultra-hip\u00a0Bright Coffee<\/a>.\u00a0Feast on traditional French fare with a San Antonio twist at\u00a0Julias Bistro and Bar<\/a>. The bistro, which is a fan-favorite on Yelp<\/a>\u00a0(boasting 4.6 stars), is usually only open for dinner, though\u00a0brunch is available on\u00a0Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you’d rather grab a New York-style sandwich to-go,\u00a0Beacon Hill Market and Deli<\/a> has classic hoagies and deli subs, as well as a vegan option if you don’t want the meats.<\/p>\n

Blanco Cafe<\/a> may not have made the list of the best spots in San Antonio for Tex-Mex<\/a>, but it certainly made the cut over on Yelp.\u00a0“When I’m looking for classic San Antonio enchiladas, this is my go-to spot,” one reviewer pens<\/a>. “Every time I’ve been, they are SLAMMED with a line out the door, but the food always comes out super quick and piping hot.” The cafe serves\u00a0Mexican food goodness for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.\u00a0Enjoy a nice walk after your meal at the nearby Beacon Hill Linear Park.\u00a0It’s the very first<\/a> linear park in San\u00a0Antonio and is\u00a0just a few minutes away from the Blanco strip.<\/p>\n
