The other, for $14,952.52, was meant to pay off her car loan.<\/p>\n<p>Billie Young, 83, says Wells Fargo refused to reimburse nearly $15,000 after a check she mailed to pay off her car loan was altered and cashed by someone else. WFAA<\/p>\n<p>Only one payment reportedly made it where it was supposed to go.<\/p>\n<p>While the utility bill was processed normally, the car loan check was altered and cashed by an unauthorized party, draining nearly $15,000 from Young\u2019s Wells Fargo account, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/investigates\/floodgates-have-open-messages-pour-in-after-wells-fargo-denial-of-fraud-claim\/287-cee6b074-5298-4d1f-9abc-4722391f9054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">her family told WFAA-TV.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wells Fargo denied Young\u2019s fraud claim in May, citing \u201cuntimely reporting,\u201d according to correspondence reviewed by the family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe claim will remain denied, and we will not reimburse you for the disputed transactions,\u201d the bank reportedly wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The rejection has taken a toll on Young, according to her family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been very sad, and more so to see we can\u2019t get through a bank visit without her vomiting or being in tears,\u201d Young\u2019s granddaughter, Kecia Byars, told WFAA-TV.<\/p>\n<p>Young\u2019s family insists she contacted the bank well within the reporting window mandated by Wells Fargo in order to submit a claim for reimbursement.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 6, Young called Wells Fargo to ask about both checks \u2014 a call she documented in her checkbook, WFAA-TV reported.<\/p>\n<p>A bank representative told her the electric bill check had not cleared, and Young requested a stop payment.<\/p>\n<p>Wells Fargo denied Young\u2019s fraud claim in May, citing \u201cuntimely reporting,\u201d months after the altered check drained nearly $15,000 from her account. WFAA<\/p>\n<p>She was also told the car loan check had cleared.<\/p>\n<p>According to the family, the rep did not tell Young that the check had been cashed by someone other than the intended payee.<\/p>\n<p>Believing the loan had been paid, Young took no further action.<\/p>\n<p>Later that month, she received a bill from the lender showing the balance was still due.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until mid-October, after she obtained an image of the cashed check, that the fraud became clear, the victim\u2019s family said.<\/p>\n<p>The name of the payee had been changed to someone Young did not know and her signature appeared to have been altered.<\/p>\n<p>Young filed a fraud claim with Wells Fargo, and her family filed a report with the Dallas Police Department, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Young documented a Sept. 6, 2024 call to Wells Fargo in her checkbook \u2014 weeks after mailing the checks \u2014 when she was told the car loan payment had \u201ccleared.\u201d WFAA<\/p>\n<p>They added that the altered check was initially rejected by one bank because it appeared fraudulent before another bank ultimately cashed it.<\/p>\n<p>Young, who had banked with Wells Fargo since 1996, later closed her account.<\/p>\n<p>After WFAA aired a report on the case, Wells Fargo said it was \u201cre-reviewing\u201d Young\u2019s claim amid public backlash.
