HOUSTON \u2013 The strike in Venezuela<\/a> and the removal of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro have created a new wave of uncertainty for Venezuelans here in Houston.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, many woke up scrolling through TikTok, WhatsApp, and Facebook, searching for answers about asylum, temporary protected status (TPS) and deportation risk. <\/p>\n

\u201cThese individuals are not criminals. They\u2019re just in the United States pursuing status,\u201d said immigration attorney Renata Castro of USA 4 All. \u201cThe uncertainty over how this will translate into immigration policy is making people very, very nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Is my asylum case done?\u2019<\/p>\n

Castro said her Venezuelan clients started calling and messaging almost immediately after the news broke.<\/p>\n

Their fear is driving them to grab onto whatever information they see online, even when it\u2019s wrong or incomplete.<\/p>\n

For many, the questions are the same:<\/p>\n

Will this hurt my\u00a0asylum\u00a0case?<\/p>\n

Will\u00a0TPS\u00a0for Venezuelans be renewed or canceled?<\/p>\n

Am I now at greater risk of\u00a0detention or deportation?<\/p>\n

Should I go back to Venezuela or stay and fight my case?<\/p>\n

Castro warns that the answers are complicated \u2014 and they\u2019re changing quickly with U.S. policy.<\/p>\n

She notes that many Venezuelans have claimed asylum based on political persecution by Maduro\u2019s government. With Maduro now removed, she expects \u201ca lot of conflict and a lot of chaos\u201d in how asylum cases are decided, both for new arrivals and for people who already have pending cases in the United States.<\/p>\n

At the same time, challenges to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans mean the stakes are even higher.<\/p>\n

Castro says the future of TPS will likely be a key signal:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Trump reenacts TPS or re-extends TPS for Venezuelans, this will be a very strong sign that he and his cabinet see the situation in Venezuela as not being resolved\u2026 but if the Trump administration says, \u2018you know what, we are not re-extending TPS,\u2019 then what I anticipate is a surge in deportations of Venezuelans back to their home country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why social media advice is so dangerous right now<\/p>\n

With so much uncertainty, many Venezuelans are turning first to friends, influencers, and group chats for guidance. Castro says that\u2019s a serious risk.<\/p>\n

Instead of trusting influencers or group chats, Venezuelans need to seek real legal help from qualified sources, she says. <\/p>\n

One missed ICE check\u2011in or court date can lead to a denied application \u2014 or even a deportation order.<\/p>\n

Attorneys emphasize:<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t assume your asylum case is automatically over.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t skip\u00a0court dates\u00a0or\u00a0ICE check\u2011ins, even if you\u2019re scared.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t file new applications, travel, or move without getting professional legal advice.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t rely on screenshots, rumors, or viral videos as your main source of information.<\/p>\n

Carry documents with you. Keep your passport and foreign ID on hand, along with any work permits and evidence of what happened to you in Venezuela: threats, police reports, news articles. Plus, proof of life in Houston: a lease, pay stubs, school records.<\/p>\n

Check only official sources\u00a0for TPS updates:<\/p>\n

Be skeptical of \u201cnews\u201d that only appears on social media but can\u2019t be verified on USCIS.gov or through a reputable legal source.<\/p>\n
