EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 Doctors in El Paso are reporting a significant rise in flu cases, noting a sharp increase before students were released for winter break, according to Dr. Hector Ocaranza, the El Paso city and county health authority. <\/p>\n
Speaking to KFOX14\/CBS4 on Monday, Dr. Ocaranza said holiday gatherings have contributed to the surge of flu cases as flu season typically peaks from December through February. <\/p>\n
“Well, what we’re seeing is that there’s a lot more people getting sick with the flu during this time,” Dr. Ocaranza said.<\/p>\n
Dr. Ocaranza continued by explaining that the flu changes every year, which is why there is updated information for the flu vaccine from September to February. <\/p>\n
Infants, pregnant women, older people, and those with chronic health conditions are most at risk for complications, Dr. Ocaranza said. <\/p>\n
Dr. Ocaranza also advises residents to get vaccinated, stay home if feeling sick, and practice good hygiene, adding that vaccination remains an effective way to prevent flu complications. <\/p>\n
The increase in flu cases comes as some hospitals across the Borderland are seeing more people in the waiting room. <\/p>\n
Dr. Ocarana noted that the spike in cases may lead to longer wait times at clinics and hospitals.<\/p>\n
