He then asked Takayuki Inoue, the chief marketing officer of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/daikin\/\" id=\"auto-tag_daikin_1\" data-tag=\"daikin\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daikin<\/a>, to stand up. \u201cThank you, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDaikin, a Japanese HVAC company, is entering the second year of a 15-year naming rights deal with the Astros stadium that will pay the team more than $140 million, according to someone familiar with the terms. For most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/mlb\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mlb_1\" data-tag=\"mlb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MLB<\/a> teams, naming rights are the most valuable corporate asset they can sell. In the case of the Astros, the team may have received something more valuable than money\u2014an assist in making the first major free-agent splash of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tImai has agreed to a three-year deal worth a reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/astros\/news\/tatsuya-imai-astros-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">$54 million<\/a>, making him the team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/mlb\/houston-astros\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">highest-paid<\/a> starting pitcher. He\u2019s also the first player that the Astros have ever signed directly out of Asia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOf course, the Imai signing works well for Daikin, too. While it\u2019s unclear exactly what Inoue\u2019s role was in the free agent process\u2014a rep for the company didn\u2019t immediately respond to an inquiry\u2014there are obvious benefits for a Japanese company to have a Japanese star playing in the venue that bears its name. Daikin was mentioned multiple times, by multiple people, during Monday\u2019s press conference, and Inoue <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6943840\/2026\/01\/05\/tatsuya-imai-astros-jim-crane-asia\/\">reportedly<\/a> took part in the official photos with Imai afterwards\u2014all things that likely delight a high-paying partner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Daikin Park partnership, announced in November 2024, appears to have helped shift the team\u2019s entire approach in Asia. Crane spoke Monday about his team\u2019s scouting presence in Tokyo, Seoul and Taiwan, all of which are recent developments. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6943840\/2026\/01\/05\/tatsuya-imai-astros-jim-crane-asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Athletic<\/a>, Crane and some other Astros executives recently toured the Daikin headquarters and manufacturing plants, and some local baseball stadiums.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ll be moving pretty fast in Asia,\u201d Crane said Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCrane\u2019s non-Astros businesses have been critical here as well. His freight and supply chain company, Crane Worldwide Logistics, had a pre-existing relationship with Daikin. He said Monday that the team\u2019s scouting apparatus across Asia was able to \u201cset up quickly\u201d by working out of Crane offices. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/feature\/mlb-team-values-rankings-list-1234715821\/\" class=\"c-lazy-image__link lrv-a-unstyle-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-sportico-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767725357_749_image.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"509\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEveryone in MLB is currently chasing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/los-angeles-dodgers\/\" id=\"auto-tag_los-angeles-dodgers_1\" data-tag=\"los-angeles-dodgers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a>, in more ways than one. The two-time World Series champs make more money than anyone else in the sport, spend among the most, and have built a balanced roster of homegrown talent and free-agent signings. Some of the biggest examples of the latter have come via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/japan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_japan_1\" data-tag=\"japan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a>. Shohei Ohtani gets the most attention, of course, but the team\u2019s postseason run was also fueled by pitchers Roki Sasaki and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the World Series MVP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/podcasts\/sporticast\/2025\/dodgers-revenue-billion-sports-podcast-sporticast-1234874498\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/podcasts\/sporticast\/2025\/dodgers-revenue-billion-sports-podcast-sporticast-1234874498\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">recent episode<\/a> of the Sporticast podcast, Dodgers president Stan Kasten told stories about the team\u2019s pursuit of both Sasaki and Ohtani. He also discussed the impact that the team\u2019s Asian presence has had on business.
