El Paso Animal Services reports influx to start new year<\/p>\n

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM<\/a>)\u00a0\u2014\u00a0\u00a0El\u00a0Paso Animal Services\u00a0(EPAS)\u00a0is starting the new year with an all-too-familiar challenge: an overwhelming number of dogs arriving at their shelters.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0always\u00a0anticipated\u00a0with any holidays, but with\u00a04th\u00a0of July and New Year\u2019s, those tend to be the top two holidays for most pets to go missing because of the fireworks. On top of the festivities that are going on, where you have guests coming over, the doors open, leaving fences open, all of that just creates that perfect recipe for pets to go missing, unfortunately,\u201d said Julieanne Newbold, the\u00a0public affairs coordinator with EPAS.<\/p>\n

According to the agency, more than 200 dogs were taken in\u00a0between Jan. 1 and Jan.\u00a05,\u00a0many of them separated from their families during holiday celebrations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0always so important to do your research before you take a pet into your family. Be a responsible pet owner\u00a0and those are pets. They only have us to look after them. So,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0making sure that your\u00a0fences\u00a0are confined for your\u00a0pets\u00a0where they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0go missing, and bringing them indoors, especially at nighttime to avoid any\u00a0possible escapes. Making sure\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0microchipped, vaccinated,\u00a0spayed\u00a0and neutered. Doing all the things you\u00a0possibly\u00a0can\u00a0for your pet because again, they\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0do them themselves,\u201d Newbold said.<\/p>\n

With shelter capacity around 138% across all facilities, Newbold said\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0important for the community to reunite with their pets or consider fostering and adopting.<\/p>\n

To help with the influx, Animal Services is offering free adoptions on\u00a0dogs\u00a030 pounds and up through its Account-A-Buddy campaign. You must be 18 years old or older and have a valid photo ID.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur annual campaign to get people to stick to those New Year\u2019s resolutions that they might be having, whether it\u2019s to be more active and going on hikes and walks more, or even just having more hangout time and chill time at home with a companion.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0been noted\u00a0that most pets that\u00a0most pet owners\u00a0actually have\u00a0better health, better mental health.\u00a0So,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0really good\u00a0to\u00a0actually open\u00a0up your home to those pets, to\u00a0kind of change\u00a0that lifestyle for yourself,\u201d Newbold said.<\/p>\n
