His nephew, Omar Cardenas, used to stay here. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">During a raid conducted in March, agents with U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/high-school-sports\/soccer\/2024\/03\/12\/asylum-seeking-cousins-who-fled-venezuela-find-home-on-arlington-martins-boys-soccer-team\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/high-school-sports\/soccer\/2024\/03\/12\/asylum-seeking-cousins-who-fled-venezuela-find-home-on-arlington-martins-boys-soccer-team\/\">Immigration and Customs Enforcement<\/a> had patiently waited outside their apartment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThey were waiting for Omar to leave the house to arrest him,\u201d Melendez recalled. C\u00e1rdenas arrived in North Texas two years before his arrest, seeking to escape the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/world\/2026\/01\/04\/rubio-suggests-us-wont-run-venezuela-day-to-day\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/world\/2026\/01\/04\/rubio-suggests-us-wont-run-venezuela-day-to-day\/\">Nicol\u00e1s Maduro regime,<\/a> which had ruled Venezuela for 13 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Maduro was captured at his compound in Caracas by U.S. forces following narcoterrorism charges, after a successful operation that took place early Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Austin-based immigration attorney Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch is deeply familiar with the emotions Venezuelans are experiencing and the challenges they face as immigrants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been telling my Venezuelan clients: \u2018You are a target just by virtue of being Venezuelan,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Lincoln-Goldfinch said the United States\u2019 capture of Maduro will not lead U.S. immigration authorities to ease their pressure on the Venezuelan community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIt really frustrates me to hear the administration claim that what they\u2019re doing is \u2018liberating\u2019 the Venezuelan people, when what we\u2019re actually seeing here is how they torture those who fled Maduro\u2019s regime,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Lincoln-Goldfinch said that, although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/humanitarian\/temporary-protected-status\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/humanitarian\/temporary-protected-status\">Venezuelans remain eligible to seek asylum<\/a>, many are unable to appear for their court hearings because they are detained prior to reaching that stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThe problem is that we\u2019re seeing arrests and detentions during their ICE check-ins and even at their court hearings, before the judge has made a decision,\u2019\u201d Lincoln-Goldfinch said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:4096 \/ 2732\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"4096\" height=\"2732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/32HJDHDRTVFAROZH2BB2H7K7BY.jpg\" alt=\"Demonstrators carry signs and chant at the corner of Commerce and Harwood Streets during a...\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators carry signs and chant at the corner of Commerce and Harwood Streets during a &#8216;No War with Venezuela\u2019 protest at Main Street Garden in downtown Dallas, Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>El\u00edas Valverde II \/ Staff Photographer<\/p>\n<p>Policy shifts<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Immigration policy shifts have added to the uncertainty. In 2021, President Joe Biden designated Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status, granting work permits and protection from deportation to thousands. Eligibility was extended in 2023, but on Nov. 8, President Donald Trump\u2019s order to end TPS protections was carried out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Alejandro, a Venezuelan living in Dallas, says the reversal has devastated his community. She\u2019s struggling to process what this means for her future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Alejandro is convinced Biden fell into the trap set by Maduro, Venezuela\u2019s president since 2013. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cUnfortunately, the Biden administration opened the borders and allowed a lot of bad people from Venezuela to enter, and they ended up damaging our reputation,\u201d Alejandro said. \u201cMaduro\u2019s strategy was to empty the prisons in Venezuela and send all those bad people to harm this great country, the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Supporters of the strict immigration policy established by Trump\u2019s administration say a change in direction was absolutely necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe have achieved historic lows in illegal border crossings,\u201d said Chris Russo, president of Texans for Strong Borders, an organization he founded in 2022 after observing that no group was organized and actively pushing for Texas\u2011First border security and immigration policies at the state level.<\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/SP3FEMJQKFHMZKIILHBNO62ERQ.jpg\" alt=\"Sen. The U.S. has become a vital source of remittances, as Venezuelans living here send billions of dollars to their families every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In 2022 alone, Venezuela received more than $4.2 billion in remittances, approximately 5% of its GDP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The United States contributed 38% of those funds, despite hosting only 12% of Venezuelan migrants worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">As of 2023, approximately 770,000 Venezuelan immigrants resided in the U.S., accounting for slightly less than 2% of the country\u2019s total 47.8 million immigrants, according to the Migration Policy Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/VFWMJS6QARATVATST2Y6V7RHZE.jpg\" alt=\"An armored vehicle carrying Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores...\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Under Trump\u2019s second term, immigration enforcement has intensified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">His administration has launched raids against Venezuelans, citing concerns about the Tren de Aragua presence in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWhat\u2019s troubling is how Venezuelans have been singled out,\u201d said Lincoln-Goldfinch. \u201cI don\u2019t know if it\u2019s racially or politically motivated, or both, but it started early in this administration. We saw agents going after asylum-seekers and TPS holders almost immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Now, Milton and other Venezuelans face an impossible choice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re at a crossroads,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we stay, we live in fear, always looking over our shoulders.
