{"id":114878,"date":"2026-01-08T01:11:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T01:11:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/114878\/"},"modified":"2026-01-08T01:11:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T01:11:23","slug":"nasa-celebrates-artemis-ii-during-houston-texans-space-city-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/114878\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Celebrates Artemis II During Houston Texans Space City Day\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center\u00a0was front and center\u00a0Jan. 4, 2026, as the Houston Texans\u00a0faced\u00a0the Indianapolis Colts\u00a0during\u00a0Space City Day at\u00a0NRG Stadium.\u00a0Fans watched\u00a0the\u00a0Texans win\u00a0while getting a close look at NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/artemis-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Artemis II mission<\/a>, the first crewed\u00a0flight\u00a0of the Artemis campaign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Artemis II mission will send four astronauts\u2014NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen\u2014around the Moon and back to Earth to test Orion spacecraft systems in deep space and help lay the groundwork for future lunar missions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NASA connected fans with the agency\u2019s next giant leap, reinforcing Space City\u2019s role in shaping the future of human exploration.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before kickoff,\u00a027\u00a0Johnson employees\u00a0helped unfurl\u00a0the\u00a0U.S. flag\u00a0for\u00a0the national anthem, marking the start of an evening that blended football, exploration, and Houston pride.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the\u00a0BULLevard,\u00a0Johnson employees engaged with fans at a NASA activation area, where visitors explored the agency\u2019s Mobile Exhibit Trailer and learned more about\u00a0Artemis II.\u00a0Team members answered questions and shared how NASA is preparing to send humans back to the Moon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Johnson Director Vanessa\u00a0Wyche and NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins visited the\u00a0exhibit and the\u00a0Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility Program\u00a0booth, where they greeted team members and thanked volunteers supporting the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The International Space Station Program joined the celebration with a prerecorded message from the Expedition 74 crew, marking over 25 years of continuous human presence in low Earth orbit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven from 250 miles above the Earth, we\u2019re proud to represent Houston and celebrate the mission of this incredible city on and off the field,\u201d said NASA astronaut Mike Fincke.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s game reminds us how connected Houston, NASA, and the Texans truly are,\u201d said NASA astronaut Zena Cardman.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cardman highlighted how research aboard the International Space Station has led to innovations that benefit life on Earth, including applications now\u00a0used in sports and athletic safety. Advances in materials developed for spacesuits and astronaut protection have influenced the design of modern helmets and padding, while cooling technologies originally created for extreme\u00a0environments are used in training gear and protective equipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpace innovation doesn\u2019t remain in orbit, sometimes it ends up on the 50-yard line.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Watkins took the field for the Texans\u2019\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/reppin-h-town.mp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Reppin\u2019 H-Town<\/a>\u201d\u00a0appearance, joined by Johnson employees Tessa Rundle and Daniel\u00a0Kolodziejcyk\u00a0wearing NASA\u2019s Orion Crew Survival System\u00a0spacesuits.\u00a0The bright orange pressure suits are designed to protect astronauts during launch, flight, and reentry aboard NASA\u2019s Orion spacecraft.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pregame continued with\u00a0Center\u00a0Director Vanessa Wyche joining\u00a0the festivities on the field\u00a0and\u00a0participating\u00a0in the ceremonial coin toss, where she called heads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>About 30 seconds into halftime, the\u00a0Artemis Fueling the Fire video\u00a0played on the stadium jumbotron, sharing NASA\u2019s plans to return humans to the Moon and marking a major step in the agency\u2019s Moon to Mars campaign.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The video led into a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/nasa-artemis-video-interview.mp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">live interview<\/a>\u00a0with Vanessa Wyche and Jessica Watkins, where Wyche discussed the Artemis II mission and Watkins highlighted similarities between astronaut training and football training. At the conclusion of the interview, the host invited fans to take part in NASA\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www3.nasa.gov\/send-your-name-with-artemis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Send Your Name with Artemis II<\/a>\u201d\u00a0initiative,\u00a0which allows the public to have their names stored on a small chip aboard the Orion spacecraft during the mission. Participants receive a digital boarding pass and virtual guest access to select NASA launches.
