{"id":1153,"date":"2025-10-13T21:33:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T21:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/1153\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T21:33:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T21:33:09","slug":"fort-worth-naacp-honors-broadway-baptist-church-tarrant-faith-and-justice-coalition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/1153\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Worth NAACP honors Broadway Baptist Church, Tarrant faith and justice coalition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Estella Williams, president of the Fort Worth\/Tarrant County branch of the NAACP, said she couldn\u2019t think of a time when she attended a commissioners court meeting and members of Broadway Baptist Church and the Faith &amp; Justice Coalition of Tarrant County were not also present.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Broadway Baptist Rev. Ryon Price, congregants and members of the multifaith advocacy group frequently visit Tarrant County Commissioners Court meetings to push <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keranews.org\/news\/2023-05-09\/local-activists-work-with-texas-a-m-to-seek-federal-investigation-of-tarrant-county-jail\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for better county jail conditions<\/a> to lower the number of deaths at the facility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is one of many reasons why Williams said she chose to recognize the Faith &amp; Justice Coalition of Tarrant County and Price with the Dr. George D. Flemmings Award. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcdfw.com\/news\/local\/fort-worth-native-makes-history-as-naacp-president\/1972347\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Longtime NAACP member<\/a> Lorraine Miller also was a recipient of the accolade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Price received the award on behalf of the church and coalition during the NAACP 48th Annual Dr. George D. (Courtesy photo | Ryon Price)<\/p>\n<p>The award is the highest level of recognition within the Fort Worth NAACP and is named after the first president of the local chapter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Price, who chairs the coalition, said he was \u201ccompletely surprised and deeply honored\u201d to receive the award. The recognition served as \u201ca great tribute to not only the work of Broadway, but also the Faith &amp; Justice Coalition of Tarrant County,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In August, the coalition urged city and county officials to condemn antisemitism and the Tarrant GOP chair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/08\/22\/tarrant-faith-leaders-urge-officials-to-condemn-gop-chairs-anti-muslim-social-media-posts\/.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">anti-Muslim social media posts<\/a>. The group has hosted community forums on Tarrant County\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/06\/03\/tarrant-county-commissioners-vote-3-2-to-redistrict-adopting-more-republican-friendly-map\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">redistricting efforts<\/a> and partnered with the local NAACP branch in organizing a candidate forum ahead of Fort Worth\u2019s May elections. The group also hosted a Martin Luther King Jr. interfaith service in January.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important for different faiths to be working \u201cin concert with one another,\u201d instead of in silos, Price said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur faith compels us to work on behalf of justice in our communities, and it\u2019s imperative that we build bridges with others and do this work collaboratively,\u201d Price said.<\/p>\n<p>Williams said Broadway Baptist and the coalition align with the NAACP\u2019s mission of bringing inclusiveness and justice to the community. It is a hard job that comes from the heart, she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re doing it because they\u2019re committed to being able to do the work,\u201d Williams said. \u201cThey\u2019re advocates. They\u2019re true to the sense of the word of being an advocate.
