Coastal Parks plans a turtle incubation facility to support dwindling federal efforts on Padre Island National Seashore. <\/p>\n<p>CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Several agencies are coming together to fill a gap in efforts to help sea turtles year-round.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100064507607012\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nueces County Coastal Parks<\/a> is working to built a possible incubation facility that could be used during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiiitv.com\/article\/news\/local\/cold-stunned-turtles-fragile-nests-and-fight-keep-it-all-alive\/503-2c128a97-6678-4c92-91c7-15df5bf297e8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">turtle nesting season<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nueces County Coastal Parks Director Scott Cross said his department has been spearheading turtle nesting season on North Padre Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs it stands right now, we monitor all nesting and recovery of nests and sea turtle eggs from the northern boundary of the National Seashore all the way up to the Packery South Jetty, and then we do some of that on the north side of Packery,\u201d Cross said.<\/p>\n<p>With Padre Island National Seashore scaling back its operations, Cross said his department is stepping up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong a few of us, we\u2019ve talked about potential funding and the possibility of building another incubation facility on our Kleberg County property,\u201d Cross said. \u201cWe\u2019ve identified a potential funding source, but we still need to further discuss the logistics. Those conversations are happening, and we\u2019ll probably get deeper into them this spring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A gap Cross and other county leaders say needs to be filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year was a record year for our region of the coast,\u201d Cross said. \u201cI think we recovered 14 or 15 nesting sites on our section of the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nueces County Commissioner Brent Chesney, who represents Precinct 4, agrees something needs to be done, but said the project may be outside the county\u2019s control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a federal program, and it\u2019s not in the jurisdiction of Nueces County,\u201d Chesney said. \u201cBut I still feel like we need to try. We need to at least facilitate \u2014 not take the lead \u2014 but help get the right federal agencies and local agencies involved that love and care about these turtles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the project is still in its preliminary stages, Cross said he hopes it will become a reality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concept is there, and we\u2019re having conversations about where it goes from here and how long it might take,\u201d Cross said. \u201cThis could be a three- to five-year process before we get there. We just don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross said more details on the project are expected later this spring.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Nueces Co.
