EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 An El Paso organization is hosting a vigil on Friday in Downtown El Paso for the woman who was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minnesota earlier this week. <\/p>\n
The shooting occurred during what federal officials describe as an active ICE operation in Minneapolis on Wednesday. According to investigators, the woman, identified as Renee Good, was inside an SUV when an ICE agent, later identified as Jonathan Ross, fired his weapon. Good died at the scene.<\/p>\n
Indivisible the 915, a grassroots organization, is inviting the public at 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, at San Jacinto Plaza in Downtown El Paso for a “Stop ICE Violence Vigil.”<\/p>\n
According to Indivisible the 915, the public is invited to bring candles, flashlights, and posters to the vigil. <\/p>\n
“Join us to say STOP ICE VIOLENCE! Bring your candles, flashlights, and signs. We demand that our city leadership vows to protect us from ICE violence in El Paso!,” Indivisible the 915 said in a Facebook post announcing the vigil. <\/p>\n
The vigil comes days after Good was shot, sparking nationwide divide as administration officials have characterized the incident as a dangerous encounter involving an allegedly obstructed law enforcement operation.<\/p>\n
However, others have described a different picture, with supporters stating she was a neighbor, mother, and community member and posed no threat to the agent, arguing the use of deadly force was unjustified.<\/p>\n
In addition to the vigil, the organization is organizing a peaceful protest on Saturday near the El Paso Service Processing Center on Montana Avenue and Maddox Street from 1-2 p.m.<\/p>\n
“As always, this is a peaceful protest. Bring your signs. Come raise your voice!” Indivisible the 915 shared on its Facebook page about the protest. <\/p>\n
