The Vols dominated in the paint, outscoring the Aggies 34 to 22, while winning the defensive rebound battle 36 to 25.

A&M struggled at the free-throw line, going 21-for-32 on the night.

Aggies’ guard Jacari Lane led the way with 20 points, shooting 5-for-11 from the field. Center Felix Okpara led them in rebounds, collecting 11.

Next up for A&M is a trip Saturday to Austin to take on the Longhorns.

Final updates from the action:

Tennessee took its first lead of the game briefly, but A&M entered the final media timeout with the thinnest of leads. Both teams are well below their scoring averages, and defense and fouls have been the overarching themes of the game. There have been a combined 34 fouls called with just under four minutes remaining.

Article continues below this ad

Really impressive game thus far by A&M, controlling the pace and never trailing despite being on the road against a top-25 team. Now, the Vols aren’t going away, keeping the game to one possession for much of the second half, but for every answer Tennessee has had, A&M has had a counter to keep the slim lead at the third media timeout of the half.

Even though they’ve never led, the Vols are keeping the game close, cutting the Aggies’ lead to just three after tying the game at 41-41. A&M is out shooting Tennessee 37% to 33% from the field and 32% to 24% from 3-point range. Still, the Vols enter the second media timeout down just one possession.

Article continues below this ad

Good start to the half for A&M, which uses a 7-0 run to extend its lead. The Vols hit a 3-pointer to trim the lead before the media timeout, but the Aggies maintain control early in the second half.

Thanks to a 12-2 run and seven straight points, the Vols forced the Aggies to take a timeout after cutting the deficit to one. Tennessee is now 2-for-12 from beyond the arc, but finds itself hanging in with A&M in the final minutes of the first half.

Article continues below this ad

After the Vols tied the game at 15-15, the Aggies went on an 8-0 run to push them back ahead. Tennessee continues to struggle offensively, shooting just 24% from the field and has yet to make a 3-pointer on eight attempts.

Aggies push their lead up to five at the second media timeout of the half. A&M is shooting 42% from the field, while Tennessee is struggling, making just 20% of its attempts. The Vols are also 0-for-6 from beyond the arc in the early going.

Article continues below this ad

A good start for A&M, which opened the game with an 8-0 run, was squandered by a Tennessee run of its own.
