The interaction, later shared widely online, struck a chord far beyond the Texas city.

According to the Brownsville Police Department, Officers Gonzalo Rubio and Francisco Maldonado encountered the man early in the morning while driving through the downtown area. The department said the officers noticed the chilly weather and realized the man needed warm, dry clothing.

“Noticing the chilly weather and seeing that the man needed warm, dry clothing, the officers stepped in to help,” the department explained in a Facebook post,

Officer Rubio, who grew up in Brownsville, later reflected on the moment as part of everyday policing. “They’re not bothering anybody, they’re not doing anything wrong, and we just happen to be driving by,” he said of people often seen resting in the area.

The cold morning raised immediate concern when the officers saw the man trembling despite having a blanket. Rubio explained that when they tried to help, they realized the man wasn’t wearing any pants, making the situation more urgent.

According to Rubio, his partner immediately suggested buying clothing to keep the man warm. The officers worried the man might leave, so they asked dispatch to keep an eye on him while they went to purchase sweatpants.

When the officers returned, the man was still there. It’s the moment they reunited with him and helped him get dressed that was captured on video by a nearby passerby.

The Brownsville Police Department later shared the body-worn camera footage on Facebook, calling it a moment of “service and humanity.” “In an act of compassion, Officers Rubio and Maldonado purchased new sweatpants for the man to ensure he stayed warm and comfortable,” the department wrote.

As the video spread, Rubio expressed surprise at the attention it received. “Sometimes it just goes away, like okay, whatever, that’s nice, but this one kept happening,” he said.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Rubio added that the viral clip showed only a small part of the job. “It was a rainy day, we still had 12 hours to go, so much other stuff happened that day that nobody knows about,” he said.

For the department, the moment reflected its broader mission. “The Brownsville Police Department is proud of our compassionate officers who continue to embody our commitment to serving our community with dignity, empathy, and respect,” the Facebook post concluded.

Read the original article on People

NEED TO KNOW Two Brownsville police officers helped a homeless man during a cold morning patrol Body camera…

[6
1475,46405,53777,53779,39253,53780,53776,53775,53778,2455,27,29,28
post-124154","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-texas","tag-brownsville","tag-brownsville-police-department","tag-brownsville-police-officers","tag-chilly-weather","tag-cold-morning","tag-cold-morning-patrol","tag-francisco-maldonado","tag-gonzalo-rubio","tag-officers-rubio","tag-police-officer","tag-texas","tag-texas-headlines","tag-texas-news
["GET
