{"id":125210,"date":"2026-01-16T02:37:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T02:37:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/125210\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T02:37:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T02:37:15","slug":"express-lanes-flood-risk-5-northwest-austin-transportation-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/125210\/","title":{"rendered":"Express lanes, flood risk: 5 Northwest Austin transportation projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCheck out five ongoing or completed transportation projects in the Northwest Austin area, including the new US 183 North northbound express lanes and flood risk reduction projects nearing completion.<\/p>\n<p>The following information comes from Austin Capital Delivery Services, Austin Transportation and Public Works, Austin Watershed Protection and Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority.<\/p>\n<p>Ongoing projects<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.austintexas.gov\/department\/burnet-road-mobility-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Burnet Road Mobility Program<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Project: includes updated traffic signals, improved crossings, bus stop improvements, trail connections, curb extensions, drainage improvements, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant shared-use paths, raised medians and more on Burnet Road from White Horse Trail to US 183 (C2), Bright Verde Way to MoPac (C3) and US 183 to Bright Verde Way (C4).<\/p>\n<p>Update: work to begin in mid-January at Burnet Road and Koenig Lane and continue north to approximately 500 feet\u202fsouth of US 183 (C2)<\/p>\n<p>Timeline: construction on C3 is expected to begin in summer 2026, and C4 in spring 2026Cost: $13.8 million (C2), $23 million (C3), $16 million (C4)Funding source: 2016 Mobility Bond<a href=\"https:\/\/www.austintexas.gov\/department\/local-flooding\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">January Drive Flood Risk Reduction project<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Project: <\/p>\n<p>decommissioning the storm drain pipe currently located on private property and installing a larger one underneath January Drive to allow for easier maintenance and flood risk; also includes restoring native plants along the banks of Walnut Creek to prevent erosion<\/p>\n<p>Update: new storm drain pipe has been installed; remaining work includes video inspection of the new pipe, decommissioning some of the existing system, repaving, restoring native plants<\/p>\n<p>Timeline: completion expected in spring 2026Cost: $2.1 millionFunding source: 2018 drainage bonds<a href=\"https:\/\/www.austintexas.gov\/department\/little-walnut-creek-flood-risk-reduction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Little Walnut Creek Flood Risk Reduction (Phase 4)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Project: reducing the risk of flooding along Little Walnut Creek and diverting floodwaters from the creek to underground culverts, expanding a stormwater detention pond, replacing and upgrading water and wastewater lines, and adding a shared-use path<\/p>\n<p>Update: Phase 4 completed in December, including completion of stormwater and wastewater infrastructure in the road and paving the project; contractor is working on cleanup and restoration of the park staging area and detention pond at Quail Creek Neighborhood Park<\/p>\n<p>Timeline: completion expected in springCost: $28.8 millionFunding source: drainage charge, 2018 drainage bonds and Austin WaterWest Rundberg Lane Extension (Burnet Road connection)<\/p>\n<p>Project: <\/p>\n<p>extends West Rundberg Lane from Burnet Road to Metric Boulevard with an expansion of the roadway from two lanes to four lanes with a raised median, an 8-foot shared-use path on both sides, and storm sewer, water and wastewater improvements<\/p>\n<p>Update: project is currently in the design stage<\/p>\n<p>Timeline: completion expected in fall 2028Cost: $10 millionFunding source: Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization funding and city of Austin bondCompleted projects<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.183north.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">183 North Mobility Project<\/a> northbound express lane\n<\/p>\n<p>Project: the construction of two express lanes in each direction on US 183, a general-purpose lane to bring the number of non-tolled lanes to four in each direction, new shared use path connections, new sidewalks and cross-street connections for bicycles and pedestrians<\/p>\n<p>Update: northbound express lanes opened Jan. 2;
