{"id":125385,"date":"2026-01-16T05:20:06","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T05:20:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/125385\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T05:20:06","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T05:20:06","slug":"texas-tech-launches-food-animal-residency-program-to-help-rural-communities-with-vet-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/125385\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas Tech launches Food Animal Residency program to help rural communities with vet shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) &#8211; Rural and agricultural communities are facing a nationwide shortage of veterinary services, according to Jennifer Koziol, associate professor of food animal medicine and surgery at Texas Tech University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Koziol said it\u2019s important to tackle the shortage, as there could be long-term consequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cThink about the impacts to not only animal health but we also have to think about the impact more globally, and how that impacts global protein sources and things of that nature,\u201d Koziol said. \u201cFood animal veterinarians are a key piece, and really propagating that next-generation of food animal veterinarians is very important,\u201d Koziol said.<\/p>\n<p>New residency program<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/vetschool\/school-of-veterinary-medicine-stories\/posts\/2025\/12\/school-of-veterinary-medicine-receives-usda-grant.php\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/vetschool\/school-of-veterinary-medicine-stories\/posts\/2025\/12\/school-of-veterinary-medicine-receives-usda-grant.php\">Food Animal Residency<\/a>, which is planned to launch this year, is designed to mentor young veterinarians through clinical research and training.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cTo find a young individual young in their career and foster them through a residency and not only build their knowledge in food animal medicine surgery, but also develop their educational mindset,\u201d Koziol said. \u201cSo, when they do get into an academic position, they thrive and they\u2019re excellent teachers so that we can teach the next generation of food animal veterinarians,\u201d Koziol said.<\/p>\n<p>Wide-ranging benefits<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Koziol said this grant is not only important to the school but to everyone who reaps the benefits from agriculture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIf you\u2019re consuming meat and you don\u2019t have any direct ties to agriculture other than consuming meat, you will have a direct impact,\u201d Koziol said. \u201cBecause we know we\u2019re building a safe, nutritious supply of protein for the world, and so that is really the ripple effect for this grant,\u201d Koziol said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 KCBD.
