{"id":126275,"date":"2026-01-16T21:46:11","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T21:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/126275\/"},"modified":"2026-01-16T21:46:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-16T21:46:11","slug":"evangeline-project-receives-promising-update-but-still-faces-obstacles-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/126275\/","title":{"rendered":"Evangeline Project receives promising update, but still faces obstacles ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SINTON, Tx \u2014 The Evangeline Aquifer, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/corpus-christi-races-to-secure-new-water-supply-as-gov-abbott-blasts-city-for-canceling-desal-project\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a critical piece of the City of Corpus Christi\u2019s alternative water plan<\/a>, received a positive update from the San Patricio County Groundwater Conservation District on Friday. However, the update comes with a catch.<\/p>\n<p>As lake levels continue to decline, Corpus Christi Water hopes <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/san-patricio-county\/corpus-christi-water-hosts-information-session-on-evangeline-groundwater-project\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the aquifer will be pumping 12 million gallons of water per day<\/a> before the November curtailment deadline.<\/p>\n<p>To meet that deadline, several projects must move forward within what officials described as a \u201crazor-thin\u201d margin of error.<\/p>\n<p>Evangeline Project receives promising update, but still faces obstacles ahead<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo long as it continues to move along the process so that we will be in a position to be able to get the permits by Feb. 6, it keeps the project moving on schedule,\u201d Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni told KRIS 6 News.<\/p>\n<p>Those permits were submitted by the city prior to <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/san-patricio-county\/moratorium-raises-questions-about-evangeline-timeline-city-says-november-2026-goal-still-stands\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a two-month moratorium passed by the district in December.<\/a> They are expected to be administratively completed by Thursday, Jan. 22. However, the public will have 10 days to submit a protest against any permit, which would be heard on Feb. 6.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768599969_293_.png\" alt=\"EVANGELINE SESSION.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Adam Beam<\/p>\n<p>        San Patricio County residents observe a map of the Evangeline Aquifer project at an information session hosted by Corpus Christi Water.<\/p>\n<p>Zanoni and Corpus Christi Water interim Chief Operating Officer Nick Winkelmann said delays beyond Feb. 6 would jeopardize the project timeline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is imperative that our permits that were submitted ahead of the moratorium be approved by Feb. 6,\u201d Winkelmann told board members during public comment. \u201cOtherwise, the schedule for the Evangeline will be delayed, and we won\u2019t be able to make a partial delivery date by November of 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zanoni added, \u201cIf the permits are delayed much beyond Feb. 6, that means the project doesn\u2019t start, and then the end date of trying to get water beginning in November won\u2019t happen. That increases the risk that the region will go into curtailment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768599970_421_.png\" alt=\"CURTAILMENT pic.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>File<\/p>\n<p>Curtailment occurs when the water supply system reaches 180 days from the point at which total water supply would no longer meet total water demand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe unfortunate truth is we\u2019re in this position today because of decades of neglect and bad decisions,\u201d Zanoni said. \u201cSo the work we\u2019re doing today is not only to get us through this drought, but to set up a system so we don\u2019t have to go through this again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As KRIS 6 News reported in October, Corpus Christi needs 60 million gallons of new water per day before November to avoid a Level 1 water emergency.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s emergency wells along the Nueces River are producing about 11 million gallons per day, with another 17 million gallons expected by next year. The water is brackish, saltier than normal, and is only meant as a temporary solution.<\/p>\n<p>The Evangeline project could account for 24 million gallons per day, while reclaimed water could add about 16 million gallons daily by recycling treated wastewater for industrial use.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768599971_724_.png\" alt=\"GROUNDWATER CONSERVATION DISTRICT.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Adam Beam<\/p>\n<p>        The San Patricio County Groundwater Conservation District on Friday, January 16, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/corpus-christi-warns-water-supply-margins-are-tight-after-council-update\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Corpus Christi leaders learned the city\u2019s water supply is operating with little margin for error as lake levels continue to fall.<\/a> The update showed Lake Texana is already below last year\u2019s levels. Projections indicate the reservoir could drop to about 50% capacity by early spring, while water supply and demand are expected to remain closely matched for months.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to Evangeline, in August the council approved <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/corpus-christi-moves-forward-with-169-million-groundwater-deal-to-secure-water-supply\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a draft agreement for a $169 million groundwater deal. The proposed plan would draw water from the Evangeline Aquifer<\/a>.
