{"id":127996,"date":"2026-01-18T12:50:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-18T12:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/127996\/"},"modified":"2026-01-18T12:50:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T12:50:15","slug":"death-of-el-paso-ice-detainee-to-be-deemed-a-homicide-wapo-reports-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/127996\/","title":{"rendered":"Death of El Paso ICE detainee to be deemed a homicide, WaPo reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The death of an ICE detainee in El Paso is likely to be classified as a homicide by a local medical examiner\u2019s office, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/immigration\/2026\/01\/15\/ice-detention-death-homicide\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Geraldo Lunas Campos, a 55-year-old Cuban migrant who was arrested by ICE in July, died on Jan. 3 at a tent detention center at the Fort Bliss military base, one of four ICE detainees who died in federal custody in the first ten days of 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An employee of the El Paso County\u2019s Office of the Medical Examiner described the preliminary cause of death to Lunas Campos\u2019 family members as \u201casphyxia due to neck and chest compression\u201d and said \u201cour doctor is believing that we\u2019re going to be listing the manner of death as homicide,\u201d according to a recording of a phone call reviewed by the Post. The detainee who witnessed the incident told the Post they saw five guards choking Lunas Campos as he repeatedly said \u201cI cannot breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials initially gave no cause of death, issuing a statement that said Lunas Campos was being placed into segregation after he became \u201cdisruptive\u201d while in line for medication and that they were investigating his death.
