Don\u2019t be surprised if you see a lot of smoke in the sky on Monday, Jan. 19.<\/p>\n
Mustang Island State Park is planning to conduct a prescribed burn on the bay side of the park that day.<\/p>\n
Park officials are looking at burning 2,000 acres beginning in the area of Corpus Christi Pass and extending north to an established fire break across State Highway 361 from Beach Access Road 2.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the forecasted southerly wind direction, heavy smoke associated with this burn is not anticipated to affect highway traffic or the local community and should push out and rise over Corpus Christi Bay,\u201d said a post made by park officials on the park\u2019s Facebook page.<\/p>\n
Motorists will see emergency services vehicles in the area of the fire.<\/p>\n
Bayside park property will be closed to all access on the day of the burn. That includes all areas of Corpus Christi Pass and both sides of the Fish Pass.<\/p>\n
\u201cPrescribed burns are a management tool used to restore forest and prairie habitats that historically were periodically burned by natural fires,\u201d the park\u2019s Facebook post said. \u201cPrescribed burns also reduce the potential damage a wildlife could cause by reducing available fuels such as dead trees, leaf litter and other flammable vegetation on the landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prescribed fires on state parks are conducted by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department personnel \u201cwho have gone through extensive training and meet national wildland firefighting and incident management standards,\u201d the post said. \u201cAdditionally, the State Park staff work with local fire and emergency management officials to plan and conduct the prescribed fire.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t be surprised if you see a lot of smoke in the sky on Monday, Jan. 19.
