MLK Unity Parade to bring widespread downtown Houston street closures Monday<\/a><\/p>\nThose moments were not about celebration. They were about demanding equality, justice, and opportunity.<\/p>\n
Over time, many cities, including Houston, began honoring Dr. King\u2019s life through parades, turning remembrance into a community tradition.<\/p>\n
A historic change for Houston<\/p>\n
For years, Houston honored Dr. King with two major parades. Each had its own history, organizers, and supporters.<\/p>\n
This year, those two parades officially merged.<\/p>\n
The Black Heritage Society and the MLK Grande Parade partnered with the City of Houston to create the city\u2019s first MLK Unity Parade.<\/p>\n
Organizers say the decision reflects the spirit of Dr. King\u2019s message. Unity.<\/p>\n
The day will begin with a ceremony at Smith and McKinney Streets, followed by the parade step-off at Smith and Lamar.<\/p>\n
More than 300 parade units will participate, including community groups, bands, and organizations.<\/p>\n
Organizers estimated crowds could reach up to 400,000 people, making this one of the largest MLK celebrations Houston has seen.<\/p>\n
Mayor John Whitmire is one of three grand marshals, along with Charles White of the MLK Grande Parade and radio personality Madd Hatta.<\/p>\n
City leaders and parade organizers say the MLK Unity Parade is not a one-time event.<\/p>\n
They plan for this unified parade to continue in the years ahead, keeping Dr. King\u2019s legacy alive for new generations.<\/p>\n
