To honor the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.<\/a> on MLK Day, Jan. 19, the Center for Student Advocacy and Community<\/a> organized a series of events over two weeks, including a photo exhibit highlighting King\u2019s life, milestones and legacy.<\/p>\n

The exhibit, located in Student Center South<\/a>, features photographs intended to showcase pivotal moments in King\u2019s leadership during the civil rights movement and the lasting impact of his work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal is to present a collection that is historically grounded and deepens awareness of aspects of the civil rights movement,\u201d said a UH spokesperson. \u201cWe hope this collection will invite personal reflection and meaning making.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme for MLK celebrations is \u201cHope: The Foundation for Action.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Students said they felt more enlightened after viewing the exhibit.<\/p>\n

\u201cI view the exhibit as a reminder of the injustices that Black and brown people had to go through,\u201d said public policy freshman Dazani Ramirez-Gaytan.<\/p>\n

Several photos depict King speaking and leading demonstrations, including the 1965 civil rights march in Montgomery, Alabama<\/a>; the Alabama marches; a rally in Lakeview, New York; and a 1966 event in which King led African American students into Mississippi\u2019s newly integrated public schools.<\/a><\/p>\n

Students said the images emphasized King\u2019s courage and leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy favorite pictures are the ones where he is leading all the protesters,\u201d said psychology freshman Taelynn Price. \u201cIt shows how he stood up for so many people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other images focus on King\u2019s 1964 Nobel Peace Prize<\/a>. One photograph shows King embracing his wife, Coretta Scott King<\/a>, after learning he had won the award.<\/p>\n

Another image features the memorial sculpture \u201cThe Embrace,\u201d<\/a> which depicts four intertwined arms symbolizing the embrace shared by King and his wife.<\/p>\n

UH officials said the sculpture was included to highlight the personal support systems behind King\u2019s activism.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sculpture is meant to give viewers a different entry point into the story \u2014 the human relationships behind public leadership,\u201d said a UH spokesperson. \u201cIncluding it supports the exhibit\u2019s purpose of recognizing historical milestones through visuals that resonate in different ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another featured photograph is an aerial image taken Aug. 28, 1963, showing King standing at the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington, where he delivered his \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d<\/a> speech advocating for civil rights and economic justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe included images like this because they help viewers see Dr. King not as an abstract historical figure, but as someone whose impact came through real decisions, real risks and real persistence,\u201d said a UH spokesperson.<\/p>\n

Students said the exhibit serves as a reminder that King\u2019s advocacy helped pave the way for interracial relationships today.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Black, my roommate is Mexican and my best friend is white,\u201d Price said. \u201cBecause of MLK, we are friends and can coexist.\u201d<\/p>\n
