\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAllen ISD\u2019s Anderson Early Childhood School<\/a> will soon undergo renovations to completely repurpose the former elementary school, according to district officials.<\/p>\n

What happened?<\/p>\n

Allen ISD\u2019s board of trustees approved a total cost of $30.4 million to renovate the school during a Dec. 15 board meeting<\/a>. The project, managed by Huckabee Architects<\/a> and CORE Construction<\/a>, will renovate about 102,000 square feet, according to a staff presentation.<\/p>\n

The scope of work includes:<\/p>\n

Replacement of electrical systems and plumbing systemsReplacement of finishes throughout the schoolFlooringWall coverings and paintFixturesRedesign of the lobby, reception, administration, cafeteria and libraryAssistant Superintendent Brent Benningfield said it was a unique project \u201cbecause this is the first time we\u2019re converting a building\u2019s purpose.\u201d The building was first built in 1997 and was last updated in 2011, according to a district news release. <\/p>\n

The project is expected to start once contracts are finalized, and construction is expected to finish by the start of the 2026-27 school year.<\/p>\n

About the project<\/p>\n

During the staff presentation, Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Wilhelm presented renderings<\/a> of several redesigned learning spaces within the school. The new spaces will be tailored to support early childhood development, according to a district news release.<\/p>\n

Wilhelm said it was \u201cvery important\u201d to officials that the redesign is age-appropriate for the district\u2019s youngest learners.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you think about redesign of something, you need it to match the educational intent when you\u2019re looking at this program of spaces,\u201d Wilhelm said.<\/p>\n

District officials worked with their project partners to examine the building\u2019s purpose and objectives, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWords that came out [were]: inspiration, wonder, creativity, warm colors, welcoming to families, building background knowledge,\u201d Wilhelm said. \u201cThose are the things, as we go through the images, that I hope you see; that we were able to capture in this design.\u201d<\/p>\n

Board member John Holley said he couldn\u2019t \u201ctell you how excited\u201d he is about the project. He called the project \u201cphenomenal\u201d and thanked officials for the effort they put into it.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be able to go to this campus and eventually see our kids with a fully developmentally appropriate location to learn\u2014it\u2019s just phenomenal,\u201d Holley said.<\/p>\n

How we got here<\/p>\n

Renovations to the early childhood school were included in the school district\u2019s 2024 bond proposal<\/a> upon recommendations from the Project Kids Citizen Bonds Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Voters approved two bond proposals<\/a> totaling more than $442 million in November 2024.<\/p>\n

Proposition A: $419.1 millionFull renovations at multiple schoolsMechanical, electrical and plumbing work at multiple schoolsRoofing and waterproofing work at multiple schoolsConcrete and foundation repairs at multiple schoolsProposition C: $23.1 millionUpdate computers used by students and staff at all campusesMultiple projects are underway or have already been completed, Chief Communications Officer David Hicks said. Projects such as resurfacing of the tennis courts at the Lowery Freshman Center and renovations at Olson Elementary School have already been completed.<\/p>\n

Work is ongoing to construct a new multipurpose complex<\/a> and renovate the existing Allen ISD Activity Center<\/a>, Hicks said.<\/p>\n
