Now, he is requesting $403,000 from the city for work completed before his indictment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2025\/08\/21\/business-owner-charged-with-bribery-says-he-regrets-lapse-in-judgement-but-should-still-be-paid-by-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.click2houston.com\/news\/local\/2025\/08\/21\/business-owner-charged-with-bribery-says-he-regrets-lapse-in-judgement-but-should-still-be-paid-by-city\/\">In August, council members delayed paying the final bill<\/a> from Nerie Construction. However, Mayor John Whitmire said the work was tied to federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">If the city does not pay Nerie, HUD may seek to recover as much as $9 million from Houston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Council is expected to vote on the payment Wednesday, January 21st. We will let you know what happens. <\/p>\n<p>Background: KPRC 2\u2019s \u2018DRAINED\u2019 investigation exposed water billing and contract corruption<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For more than three years, KPRC 2 Investigates, led by Amy Davis, has uncovered serious problems in Houston\u2019s Public Works water department. These issues caused thousands of residents to face inaccurate water bills and overcharges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The investigation revealed overbilling, faulty water meters, and mismanagement of city contracts. These findings led to the arrest and indictment of seven people, including Patrece Lee, the former Public Works manager at the center of the corruption scandal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Lee was charged with organized criminal activity, abuse of official capacity, and bribery.
