Reports are emerging that Mexican consulates have been used to affect our elections and even our education.

While consulates play a key role in foreign policy and travel, these activities may have crossed a line. Brent Sadler with the Heritage Foundation says: “When a consulate or an embassy starts trying to sway the politics or the elections in a host country, they’ve crossed a red line.”

So is Mexico actually trying to influence our politics—and if so, how? According to some reports, Mexican consulates might be involved in the planning and organization of various protests.

Sadler thinks that’s a concern that needs to be taken seriously. “It does need to be seriously investigated,” he said, “and the American public needs to be made aware of it. The states and local police need to be turned on to this.”

There are also concerns that Mexican consulates could be providing textbooks to American schools. Sadler warned: “If they are veering into swaying our politics, we should call them on it. It’s one thing to try and present your nation’s viewpoints—it’s another thing to try to sway things for political purposes.”

Sadler says it might be time to look into closing some consulates—like when President Trump closed the Chinese consulate in Houston back in 2020.

You’ve heard that China could be influencing American politics—turns out, Mexico could be at it as well.
