Whitmire&#8217;s spokesperson and the city&#8217;s office of emergency management did not immediately respond to a request for a list of centers. <\/p>\n<p>Whitmire&#8217;s interim director of resiliency and recovery, Brian Mason, warned residents to expect as many as 48 hours of &#8220;bone-chilling cold.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Take this with a little bit of a grain of salt, but if I had to compare this to something, this is looking more like the winter storm of 2021 then it looks like the winter storm of what we had last year,&#8221; Mason said. &#8220;You know, last year we had 2 to 4 inches of snow. As many as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasstandard.org\/stories\/texas-freeze-winter-storm-2021-death-count\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">246 people died<\/a> \u2014 likely an undercount, according to researchers. <\/p>\n<p>Eight of the warming centers slated to open in Houston this weekend lack permanent power generators, but Mason said the city will place temporary generators at those sites. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/?attachment_id=541228\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-541228\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_4387-1000x667.jpg\" alt=\"Brian Mason Houston City Council\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"   data-eio=\"p\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dominic Anthony Walsh\/Houston Public Media<\/p>\n<p>Brian Mason, the city of Houston\u2019s interim director of resiliency and recovery, speaks to the Houston City Council on Jan. 21, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Whitmire&#8217;s administration pushed through a $100 million &#8220;power protection initiative&#8221; using federal disaster recovery dollars to bolster the city&#8217;s network of generators. For those concerned about pipe bursts, he said they should shut off the property&#8217;s water ahead of the storm and fully drain the pipes. <\/p>\n<p>Houston officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/city-of-houston\/2025\/01\/06\/509876\/city-of-houston-doesnt-open-warming-centers-despite-freezing-temperatures-heres-open-shelters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">declined to open warming centers<\/a> during the first of two freezes in January 2025, putting strain on the region&#8217;s network of private shelters.
