{"id":132709,"date":"2026-01-22T00:38:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T00:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/132709\/"},"modified":"2026-01-22T00:38:15","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T00:38:15","slug":"san-antonio-art-league-museum-unveils-collection-of-curiosities-from-past-century-in-free-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/132709\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio Art League + Museum unveils collection of curiosities from past century in free exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">SAN ANTONIO \u2013 With an exhibition aptly titled \u201cHidden Gems,\u201d the San Antonio Art League + Museum unveiled unseen art pieces collected over the past century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Tucked away in a two-story home at 130 King William St., the museum itself is a hidden gem within the city\u2019s long-standing art scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Founded in 1912, the nonprofit aims to promote the knowledge and interest of local art through exhibitions, classes and its free public art gallery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis is a cultural history that I don\u2019t think any other museum has quite like ours,\u201d the league\u2019s president Lyn Kurtin said. \u201cIt\u2019s so San Antonio centric and so personal to what makes our city multicultural and great.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The current exhibition pulls select paintings and sculptures from the museum\u2019s permanent collection, which includes more than 600 artworks.<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio Art League + Museum (KSAT)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saalm.org\/gems.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.saalm.org\/gems.html\">the league\u2019s website<\/a>, the exhibition unveils \u201cmasterpieces, controversial works and strange stories\u201d that help trace the evolving story of Texas art \u2014 a story characterized by contradictions and the social conditions of the time of their creation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Kurtin said context is key in understanding the artworks\u2019 place in this exhibition and value in modern times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She pointed to a painting of a young boy that hung on the wall of the museum. Sitting on an outdoor chair, the boy reads a book while a dog lays at his feet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Kurtin wants attendees to engage with art and take a closer look at the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhat does it tell us about the child and the way the child lives?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Elements of the painting \u2014 from the boy\u2019s clothing to the setting he sits at \u2014 draw attention to his affluence and social status. Kurtin asks that viewers consider individual readings of artworks and compare those thoughts to the paintings they share the room with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cArt has always had a message,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve managed to say our message over the past 150 years, in subtle ways and in overt ways, and looking at an art collection like this, which is I\u2019ve said, like a snapshot or like a time capsule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio Art League + Museum (KSAT)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Curator Vikki Fields played a vital role in crafting this time capsule, including works by San Antonio-born early 20th century impressionists to lesser-known pieces created by local professors and art students from past decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019ve been around here for a while, and I am familiar with the collection to a large degree,\u201d Fields said. \u201cI like to see things done really well.
