HOUSTON \u2013 Power outages in the Houston area are decreasing, with the latest data showing that CenterPoint Energy ended 2025 on a positive note. Outage numbers have dropped compared to previous months, signaling an encouraging trend for residents.<\/p>\n

Investigative reporter Amy Davis has been tracking the frequency of outages since the summer, using data from Whisker Labs<\/a>, a third-party company that collects nationwide outage information. <\/p>\n

In August, CenterPoint Energy had more outages than any other utility in the country, lighting up the map with yellow, red, and orange squares indicating high outage areas. September saw a decrease in outages, but October brought a surge<\/a> that again put CenterPoint at the top for the highest number of outages nationwide.<\/p>\n

However, November and December showed significant improvement. The map turned mostly blue, indicating fewer outages. In December, homes and businesses in CenterPoint\u2019s service area lost power less than once a month on average. <\/p>\n

CenterPoint\u2019s Power Outage Index was 0.49 in December, compared to the national average of 0.32.<\/p>\n

CenterPoint Energy acknowledges the data but views it differently. Nathan Brownell, vice president of CenterPoint Energy, said, \u201cWe tend not to look at it month per month, we look at it holistically across the period of time and making sure we\u2019re trending overall, and so we were very pleased with our reliability performance last year, but for us, this is just a snapshot of the journey we\u2019re going to be on long term.\u201d<\/p>\n

CenterPoint\u2019s data shows fewer outages in 2025 than in 2024, with the average customer experiencing about 30 minutes less outage time. Milder weather in November and December helped keep the lights on and allowed crews to continue upgrading utility poles and equipment.<\/p>\n

This improvement follows a previous report highlighting widespread frustration with frequent outages, flickering lights, and power surges in Houston. <\/p>\n

In October 2025, CenterPoint Energy had the worst outage performance in the country, with some neighborhoods experiencing more than eight outages in a month.<\/p>\n

Residents like Tyler Steer of Pecan Grove and Chester Cassel of Klein expressed frustration over the ongoing power issues. The Whisker Labs data helped identify trouble spots and track changes monthly, providing transparency on service reliability as CenterPoint raised electric rates.<\/p>\n
