EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 Jason Castillo, a dedicated music student from Hanks High School, was recently awarded the TMEA Bill McCormick scholarship, a prestigious honor for those involved in the Texas Music Educators Association process. <\/p>\n
Castillo, who applied for the scholarship months ago, expressed his gratitude and surprise at the turnout of family and friends who gathered to celebrate his achievement. <\/p>\n
The $15,000 scholarship offers $3,000 per year for up to five years to the winning student, who must major in a music degree program leading to Texas teacher certification, with music as the primary teaching field.<\/p>\n
I definitely wasn’t expecting this big of a turnout,” he said. “I was really overwhelmed because they were here and because I kind of knew once I saw everyone what it was for and it was a really big honor to get this.<\/p>\n
The scholarship, which requires a short essay and recommendations, will assist Castillo as he plans to attend the University of North Texas in Denton to study music education. <\/p>\n
“This money is really going to help me with all the schoolwork that I have to do with the travel since it is further,” Castillo said. <\/p>\n
His ultimate goal is to return and teach music, giving back to the community that has supported him.<\/p>\n
Castillo’s passion for music is evident in his involvement with band, choir, mariachi, and symphony. <\/p>\n
“I love being a part of music not only because I love to make music, but it’s brought me to so many people,” he said. His mother, who attended the celebration, praised his dedication. “He’s the hardest working kid I’ve ever seen,” she said. “Music is his life and to see this celebrated for him, it’s just been amazing.”<\/p>\n
As Castillo prepares for his future, he remains committed to sharing his love of music with others. “I would really love to come back and give back to the community that’s given so much to me,” he said.<\/p>\n
