A trace of freezing rain is likely with more to the north.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Weather Impact Alert weekend starts now. The cold front will move through Beeville and George West around 6 AM and Ricardo and Sarita around Noon. The front may slow down a bit as it approaches the coast, but it’s booking it right now.

A few thunderstorms will be possible especially north of I-37 and along the coast. Scattered showers will develop for most along the front. This is our first round of rainfall through the event. A few spotty showers will linger off and on into the afternoon. The next round won’t arrive until overnight into Sunday.

All day Saturday is just a rain event, and the rain will add up for some areas with 0.2-0.5″, a good bet, and higher amounts for northern counties.

This cold front will drop temperatures 10-15 degrees almost immediately. It only takes a little freezing rain to have a big impact on roads, especially bridges and overpasses. If you have to drive, it’s best to avoid driving over those. We want to emphasize that freezing rain is not guaranteed for most of the area, but remains possible. If you can, stay put until Sunday afternoon.

We aren’t expecting widespread power outages, but a few may occur. The highest ice accumulations are expected far to our north, between I-10 and I-20.

Freezing rain depends entirely on our surface temperature. Right now, it looks like most of the Coastal Bend will at least reach freezing breifly Sunday morning. We will also see another round of rain moving through the area Sunday morning. The timing is looking more favorable for freezing rain, but remember it has to be at least 32 degrees for the rain to freeze. No freeze means no freezing rain.

In places where freezing rain doesn’t occur, it’s also possible that the dampness from rain on Saturday lingers and freezes overnight into Sunday morning.
