{"id":137800,"date":"2026-01-25T20:07:07","date_gmt":"2026-01-25T20:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/137800\/"},"modified":"2026-01-25T20:07:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-25T20:07:07","slug":"winter-weather-person-found-dead-from-hypothermia-in-austin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/137800\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter weather: Person found dead from hypothermia in Austin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">AUSTIN, Texas &#8211; Officials say a person was found dead in North Austin, reportedly due to the winter weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KTBC\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The person was found at around 6 a.m. near 38th 1\/2 St. and I-35 near a gas station.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The Austin Police Department says nothing suspicious was found.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Austin Mayor Kirk Watson says it&#8217;s believed that the person died from hypothermia.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KTBC\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">What you can do:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Mayor Watson says this is a reminder that people should use the warming and cold shelters that have been opened in the area.<\/p>\n<p> List of warming shelters Travis County Austin <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Overnight shelter<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Due to cold overnight temperatures, the City of Austin will open its cold weather shelters from Friday, Jan. 23 through Sunday, Jan. 25.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">According to the city, those who need shelter will need to go to One Texas Center, at 505 Barton Springs Road, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, and between 2\u20138 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 25, to register for overnight shelter.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">CapMetro bus routes to the OTC are lines: 1, 7, 10, 20, 30, 105, 801. Anyone seeking a cold weather shelter who does not have the means to pay the fare will still be given a ride.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">You can also call the Cold Weather Shelter Hotline at (512) 972-5055.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Warming centers<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The Austin Public Library is also opening three branches from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for people seeking warmth during the day on Saturday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 25.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Those branches are: \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Central Library \u2013 710 W Cesar Chavez StTerrazas Branch Library \u2013 1105 E Cesar Chavez StLittle Walnut Branch Library \u2013 835 W. Rundberg Ln. Williamson County Georgetown <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Helping Hands of Georgetown is activating a warming center at the Getsemani Community Center, 412 E. 19th St.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The warming center will be activated from Friday, Jan. 23 through Tuesday, Jan. 27. The center will open from 6 p.m. until 9 a.m. the following morning.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Pets are welcome. The animals must stay in a closed crate while indoors and the owners are responsible for their care. Crates, food, and sanitary bags will be available if needed.<\/p>\n<p> Taylor <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">St. James Episcopal Church and the Taylor Center for Assistance &amp; Navigation (TaylorCAN) will open for a 24-hour cold weather shelter starting on Friday, Jan. 23 through Tuesday, Jan. 27.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The shelter will open at 7 p.m. and will remain open until Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Sleeping spaces, electrical outlets for charging devices, and hot food and snacks will be provided.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">If you have questions, call or text TCAN at 737-306-4574.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">For volunteers: If you can assist with shelter supervision, contact Terry Pierce at 512-826-6278 by text or phone.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">If you would like to donate items to the church, you can between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. starting Friday. If no one is present, leave them on the porch at 614 Davis.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The following items will be accepted:<\/p>\n<p> Waterproof winter glovesSoft fruit \u2014 bananas, grapes, etcSoft breakfast bars or protein snacksSugar packetsPeanut butter and jelly in plastic containers for distributionLoaves of bread &#8211; white or whole grain. <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The church said they can&#8217;t receive perishable or home-prepared food.<\/p>\n<p> Bastrop County Elgin <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">A warming center has been set up at Elgin Open Door Ministries, 108 Depot Street. It will open beginning on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p> Bexar County San Antonio <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Resilience hubs<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The city will open six overnight Resilience Hubs starting Saturday, Jan. 25, through Monday, Jan. 26. Graves St.<\/p>\n<p> Marble Falls <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The Ark of Highland Lakes will open a warming center starting on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 8 a.m.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">In Marble Falls, the warming center is at St. John\u2019s Catholic Church at 105 FM 1431.<\/p>\n<p> Caldwell County Lockhart <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The American Legion at 1501 N Colorado Street, will open starting Friday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. The center will be open until it is no longer needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">There are some overnight accommodations available. Guadalupe Street, will be open starting Jan. 24.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The overnight shelter will be open from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. the following day. It will reopen at noon if freezing conditions continue.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">The shelter offers 40 cots on a first-come, first-serve basis and will provide free evening meals at 4 p.m. and breakfast at 8 a.m.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Non-aggressive pets can stay with their owners on leashes.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">Transportation to the warming center is not provided by the county. Residents should make personal arrangements.<\/p>\n<p> Uhland <\/p>\n<p data-v-6c8e215c=\"\">A warming center at St Michael\u2019s Catholic Church Hall, at 80 S.
