In a statement on the district&#8217;s website, Houston ISD said it will begin conducting districtwide heating checks for every building at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. They add that most HVAC systems in the district can be adjusted remotely, HISD buses are heated, and the district\u2019s transportation team has winterized the bus fleet \u2014 which includes checking batteries, topping off fuel and walking drivers through cold-weather safety procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Sign up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/hellohouston\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hello, Houston!<\/a> daily newsletter to get local reports like this delivered directly to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Tarkington ISD, in the upper northeastern part of the greater Houston area, is the only district so far to remain closed tomorrow. Tarkington&#8217;s website says the decision was made after a pipe burst, causing a major water leak, which disrupted water service to several district facilities. <\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/weather\/2026\/01\/26\/541622\/houston-weather-forecast-winter-storm-freeze-nws\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Freezing Houston area faces more cold weather ahead<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conroe ISD encouraged parents and students to make the best decision for their family since &#8220;morning temperatures will be extremely cold during bus pickup and school arrival.&#8221; Katy ISD, an area that experienced some of the strongest elements of the storm locally, will also reopen, but added updates regarding athletics, fine arts, and other activities will be shared by coaches and directors directly. <\/p>\n<p>Spring ISD warned &#8220;some [bus] routes may experience delays&#8221; and asked parents to &#8220;allow extra time as needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A midday meeting with all area superintendents was held Monday to discuss the forecast and assess the current conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Houston will also reopen its campus for classes starting Tuesday. The University of Houston, Lone Star College, and Houston City College will all reopen their campuses for classes tomorrow. Rice University held classes remotely on Monday, but said its campus will reopen and resume all services and activities tomorrow. <\/p>\n<p>KIPP charter schools said as of Monday, there are no plans to cancel classes for any of their schools across the Houston area for Tuesday.
