EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 The population of Texans aged 65 and older is growing faster than any other age group in the state, and with it, concerns about driving safety. <\/p>\n

Since 2015, the number of fatal crashes involving drivers aged 65 and older in Texas has increased by 39%. In 2024, 18% of all fatal crashes in the state involved older drivers.<\/p>\n

Lauren Macias-Cervantes from the Texas Department of Transportation highlighted the importance of safe driving tips for seniors on KFOX14 Community Conversations. <\/p>\n

TxDOT advises aging drivers to drive during the day and in good weather, avoid rush hours and congested areas, maintain a safe speed, and regularly check their vision and hearing. <\/p>\n

Seniors are also encouraged to consult with their doctors about medication side effects that could impact driving.<\/p>\n

To support mature drivers, TxDOT offers free CarFit checkups, where experts adjust vehicle settings to ensure optimal visibility and control.<\/p>\n

For caregivers concerned about a senior’s driving ability, Macias-Cervantes suggests collecting information on the driver’s behavior, discussing concerns, and exploring alternative transportation options.<\/p>\n
