But an even more distinct group is the billionaires who give away a high percentage of their wealth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That includes investor and philanthropist George Soros (an <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2017\/10\/17\/george-soros-open-society-18-billion\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2017\/10\/17\/george-soros-open-society-18-billion\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimated 76%<\/a> of his wealth has been donated), novelist and ex-wife of <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/amazon-com\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Amazon<\/a> founder Jeff Bezos <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/10\/billionaire-mackenzie-scott-doubles-down-on-dei-with-42-million-donation\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/10\/billionaire-mackenzie-scott-doubles-down-on-dei-with-42-million-donation\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">MacKenzie Scott<\/a> (about 50%-60%), investor Warren Buffett (30% so far, but has <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/06\/28\/warren-buffett-wealth-estate-family-charity\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2022\/06\/28\/warren-buffett-wealth-estate-family-charity\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pledged 99%<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/microsoft\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> cofounder Bill Gates and philanthropist Melinda French Gates (20% so far, but has also <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/08\/bill-gates-foundation-200-billion-20-years-eradicate-diseases-mortality-philanthropy\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/05\/08\/bill-gates-foundation-200-billion-20-years-eradicate-diseases-mortality-philanthropy\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pledged 99%<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And now, a Houston billionaire couple is joining the ranks of these famous businesspeople and philanthropists, pledging to donate the vast majority of their wealth. Rich and Nancy Kinder <a href=\"https:\/\/abc13.com\/post\/houston-billionaires-rich-nancy-kinder-pledge-give-away-95-wealth-charities\/18014421\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/abc13.com\/post\/houston-billionaires-rich-nancy-kinder-pledge-give-away-95-wealth-charities\/18014421\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">told<\/a> Houston news station ABC13 they\u2019re giving away 95% of their estimated $11 billion to local charities. The remaining $550 million will go to their offspring, who they hope will follow in their footsteps with charitable giving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want our grandchildren to be proud of us, and I think they are. And I want them to know that\u2019s what we expect of them when they grow up,\u201d Nancy Kinder said. \u201cThey have to give back, and it\u2019s not all about us. They have to carry it forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Who are Rich and Nancy Kinder?<\/p>\n<p>Rich and Nancy Kinder are Houston-based billionaires and prominent philanthropists, most recognized for their extensive charitable giving focused on local Houston causes like art institutions, medical research projects, and urban living conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rich Kinder cofounded <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/kinder-morgan\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/kinder-morgan\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kinder Morgan<\/a>, a major North American energy infrastructure company, where he still serves as executive chairman. Kinder Morgan <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/kinder-morgan\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/kinder-morgan\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ranked 193<\/a> on the 2025 Fortune 500 ranking,\u00a0 with more than 30,000 miles of pipeline and a $66 billion market cap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nancy Kinder is president and CEO of the Kinder Foundation, which the couple established together in 1997. Together they\u2019ve directed more than $700 million in grants toward urban green space, education, and quality-of-life improvements in Houston. Nancy Kinder also serves as chairman of The Downtown Park Corp. and advisory board president at Rice University\u2019s Kinder Institute for Urban Research.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the Kinders are some of Houston\u2019s wealthiest residents, and were among the first to sign The Giving Pledge, a philanthropic campaign launched in 2010 by Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and Warren Buffett that encourages the world\u2019s wealthiest people to publicly commit to donating at least half of their wealth to charitable causes during their lifetime or upon their death. The Kinder Foundation has donated <a href=\"https:\/\/kinderfoundation.org\/about-us\/financials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/kinderfoundation.org\/about-us\/financials\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">more than $890 million<\/a> since its inception.<\/p>\n<p>The Kinder Foundation didn\u2019t immediately respond to Fortune\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>What philanthropy experts say about giving wealth away\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although 256 individuals, couples, or families have signed The Giving Pledge as of August, The Institute for Policy Studies found wealth is <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalresearch.org\/article\/a-report-on-the-giving-pledge-wealth-is-growing-faster-than-its-given-away\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/capitalresearch.org\/article\/a-report-on-the-giving-pledge-wealth-is-growing-faster-than-its-given-away\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">still being accumulated faster than it\u2019s being given away<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf ultra-wealthy donors like the Giving Pledgers aren\u2019t timely in fulfilling their promises to give away more of their wealth, we must enact measures to ensure more donations actually reach working charities,\u201d wrote report co-author Bella DeVaan, associate director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ips-dc.org\/project\/charity-reform-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/ips-dc.org\/project\/charity-reform-initiative\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\">Charity Reform Initiative<\/a> at The Institute for Policy Studies.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why Connie Collingsworth, former COO and chief legal officer of The Gates Foundation has emphasized the importance of charitable planning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s particularly crucial\u2014especially for women\u2014to plan how much and when wealthy individuals want to give their wealth away, particularly as we enter the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/17\/124-trillion-great-wealth-transfer-women-confidence-gap-financial-planning\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/10\/17\/124-trillion-great-wealth-transfer-women-confidence-gap-financial-planning\/\" class=\"sc-5ad7098d-0 lcJVdL\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$124 trillion Great Wealth Transfer<\/a>, she said last week at Fortune\u2019s Most Powerful Women conference in Washington, D.C.,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s giving is much, much more sophisticated and much more complex,\u201d Collingsworth said, who added wealthy individuals should consider starting to give away more of their fortune before they pass.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe issues are here today.
