EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 Eastwood High School honored the 50th anniversary of its 1976 boys basketball state championship team on Monday.<\/p>\n
The 1976 Troopers were the last El Paso-area boys basketball team to win a state title, defeating John Tyler High School 74-62 in the UIL 4A championship.<\/p>\n
The celebration took place from 2:30 to 5 p.m. on Monday at the school’s competition gym located at 2430 McRae Blvd.<\/p>\n
Eastwood coach Julio Lopez spoke to KFOX14\/CBS4 on Monday about the special event. <\/p>\n
“Between today and tomorrow, it’s just a great two days on in history. That’s exactly what the 76th state championship team was. You know they created history, they made history. For us here at Eastwood High School, we’re very fortunate. We have a lot of great alumni, a lot of great teams over the years. State championship teams and athletes that have written our hallways, and for us to be able to recognize them tomorrow. It’s just really, it’s a real special event for the 50th anniversary,” Lopez said. <\/p>\n
The championship team will also be recognized at halftime during the Troopers’ varsity boys basketball game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27.<\/p>\n
